As It Turns 25, IFC Films Announces Rebrand

IFC Films, a prominent figure in the specialized film distribution industry, is undergoing a brand transformation to The Independent Film Company. This revamped division will now fall under the expanded umbrella of IFC Entertainment Group, which also includes the IFC Center cinema, RLJE label, and streaming platform Shudder dedicated to horror content.

Although the name change might seem minor, Scott Shooman, head of IFC Entertainment Group, explains to The Hollywood Reporter that “As viewers become more knowledgeable and link certain types of movies with their providers, it became crucial to clearly define and strengthen our consumer identity.” Thus, The Independent Film Company (commonly known as IFC) has unveiled a fresh logo, along with an audio theme by Adam “Adrock” Horovitz from the Beastie Boys.

The fresh rebranding is a milestone for the independent film distributor that supported films like Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” and Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha”, as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. Their recent releases include the Oscar-nominated animation “Memoir of a Snail”, dramatic pieces such as “Blackberry”, romantic period piece “The Taste of Things”, and horror title “Late Night with the Devil” that recorded its highest opening weekend ever with $2.8 million. Future IFC releases include the horror film “Clown in a Cornfield” and shark movie “Dangerous Animals”, which was recently selected for Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight. As Shooman puts it, “The Independent Film Company builds upon what the curators of the past created: quality films, films that prioritize filmmakers, unconventional content – all layered onto a new collection of movies.”

Over the last year, there have been significant successes in the specialized film market, such as Neon’s movie “Longlegs,” which grossed $74.3 million domestically, and A24’s “Civil War,” earning $68.7 million domestically as well.

According to Shooman, “We are firm advocates of theatrical experiences.” Last year, you witnessed our biggest opening weekend ever, as well as A24 and Neon’s record-breaking openings. This indicates a strong desire for high-quality films, and as we continue to deliver such movies, audiences will continue to attend them.
