As One Of The Last Stops On The Eras Tour, Taylor Swift Mania Has Infected My Town, And I Just Can't Shake It Off

As a seasoned gamer and cynical observer of popular culture, I can’t help but feel a sense of disillusionment as Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour comes to a close in my city of Indianapolis. I find myself questioning whether I’ve been living in a parallel universe where the orange door is the key to unlocking the secrets of the Matrix, rather than just another promotional gimmick for an iconic pop star.

After seemingly endless days, The Eras Tour is drawing to a close, but here in Indianapolis, the excitement is palpable as we eagerly await Taylor Swift’s arrival! Despite the various theories swirling about an orange door and its implications, I find myself fixated on one truth: Taylor Swift is gracing our city, and I can no longer suppress my anticipation.

Taylor Swift is widely recognized as a cultural icon, and it seems the city is pulling out all the stops to demonstrate its excitement about hosting one of the final stops on her legendary tour. However, I must confess that the level of pomp and circumstance surrounding this event reminds me more of red carpets rolled out for several past presidents than I’ve ever seen before. Now, I’m not suggesting I’m overly nationalistic or anything, but there’s an undeniable aura around her arrival that feels quite strange to me.

The Amount Of Tributes To Taylor Swift Around Town Is Borderline Insanity

As a gamer diving into an immersive role-play scenario, I’d share this:

  • The dinosaur statues outside the Children’s Museum have been fitted with bracelets.
  • The street names have been changed to names of Taylor Swift’s songs.
  • Several parties are planned around town that are themed to celebrate the singer.
  • Restaurants are changing their menus to offer Eras Tour-themed offerings.

Besides all that, it’s worth mentioning that Beech Grove, a city in the Indianapolis metropolitan region, has rebranded itself as Beech Grove (Taylor’s Version). An interesting tidbit: this city was featured briefly in the teaser for ‘Will & Harper’, where characters are spotted loitering in the Wal-Mart parking lot. It’s quite a flurry of activity, and though Taylor Swift fans worldwide might cherish each moment, I find myself feeling somewhat overwhelmed by it all.

A Vast Majority Attending The Final Stop Won’t Be From Indianapolis

As a gamer, I don’t usually count down the days for Taylor Swift’s new releases, but I’m not one to bash her either. My daughter and niece are huge fans of her music, and even though it’s not really my style, I can understand the excitement of her followers. It’s heartwarming to see them getting a chance to witness one of the biggest artists in the world, creating memories they can cherish for years to come.

Then I learned from local Indianapolis reporter Eric Graves that over 89% of ticket-buyers were from outside of the city, so a vast majority of the Swifties here won’t even get to see her on any of the three nights she’s performing at Lucas Oil Stadium. Business owners and Indianapolis officials are salivating at the revenue of somewhere in the ballpark of 200,000 people coming in to spend money, and that’s valid. This event puts a big spotlight on the city, and hopefully convinces others it is worthy of future mega-events.

Simultaneously, it’s disheartening to observe an occasion that holds great importance to a fanbase, being largely inaccessible to the local residents. It seems less like an event specifically for Indy residents and more like a lucrative concert that just so happens to be in Indianapolis.

Through No Fault Of Taylor Swift, This Is All Making Me Anti-Taylor Swift

As a gamer, I’d say this whole vibe is like being in a game mode during non-gaming seasons. Even if I don’t usually care for it, it seems to be everywhere, and I can’t help but notice it, no matter where I look. At the start of this month, I used to scoff at Bill Belichick when he grumbled over Taylor Swift on TV. Now, as we wrap up this month, I find myself understanding his feelings.

Although Taylor Swift hasn’t personally made me listen to her music or purchase her merchandise, her massive and fiercely devoted fanbase, coupled with her marketability for companies, can sometimes give the impression that she has. It’s puzzling why I should know about the Reputation announcement on this tour since I don’t fully understand what it entails. However, due to her being featured in virtually every piece of local media I consume, escaping this ubiquity feels almost impossible.

I strongly believe in living and letting others live, rather than disliking something without reason. However, everyone has their limits. Although many are excited about it, the announcement of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour coming to Indianapolis has significantly altered my view of Taylor Swift and her legacy, which wasn’t her fault.

Feeling rather dismayed by the excessive noise and commercialism that comes with Taylor Swift’s visit, and longing for the quiet simplicity of the city beforehand, leaves me in a state similar to an old curmudgeon. To be clear, I’m not so resentful I’ll delve into her videos featuring P. Diddy. I should be as excited as others are about this significant weekend approaching, but instead I find myself seething inside, anticipating the downtown chaos and counting down the days until it passes. No apologies necessary.

The “Eras Tour” makes its way to Indianapolis from November 1st to the 3rd, marking the last U.S. stop for this legendary tour. Though I might not be privy to the latest Taylor Swift news, there’s certainly no lack of Swifties among our TopMob team – so stay tuned for updates!
