As Rumors Swirl Around Top Gun 3, Lewis Pullman Shares His Take On Possibly Reuniting With Tom Cruise For The Film

As a gamer who has lived through the era of arcade classics and blockbuster movie sequels, the anticipation for Top Gun 3 is like the thrilling dogfight scene in the original film – it’s exhilarating, nerve-wracking, and leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Over the past few years, I’ve been fortunate to establish my own identity in the entertainment industry, thanks to films and series like “Bad Times at the El Royale,” “Catch-22,” “Outer Range,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and the upcoming 2024 release of “Salem’s Lot,” now available for streaming with Max subscription. However, among these projects, my most memorable experience has been working on “Top Gun: Maverick” where I portrayed Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd. This sequel to the iconic 1986 movie was the second highest-grossing film worldwide in 2022, and now, I’ve shared my thoughts about reuniting with Tom Cruise as whispers of “Top Gun 3” grow louder.

During a recent conversation about “Salem’s Lot” and other aspects of his career, such as his role in the upcoming Marvel film “Thunderbolts,” where he plays Sentry (known by another name in the comics), on “Just for Variety with Marc Malkin,” Pullman provided some insights into the current status of “Top Gun 3.

I wish I knew more. I’m not blowing smoke. I wish I knew more. All I know is the Glen Powell narrative. He’s claiming there is a script. And this has been said since day one, is as long as it’s earned and as long as Tom feels like it continues the story of Maverick in a way that part of the story that needs to be told, then I think it could happen.

As far as official statements go, Paramount Pictures hasn’t confirmed that Top Gun 3 is definitely happening. However, unofficially, Glen Powell, who starred in Hangman, mentioned back in July that he had a planned date for the sequel, suggesting it may start filming soon. Additionally, Lewis Pullman has heard rumors that there’s now a script for Top Gun 3, but no one has contacted him to verify if this information is accurate or not.

Regardless, Pullman is confident that so long as Tom Cruise thinks there’s a good reason to do Top Gun 3, i.e. continue the story of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, then it’ll happen eventually. And while he didn’t come outright and say it, I imagine Pullman would be game to reprise Bob. Now that his profile in Hollywood has gotten even bigger, maybe he could parlay that into his character having a more important role in the next installment… again, assuming it happens.

It’s highly likely that Paramount Pictures is hoping for another installment of Top Gun given its impressive $1.5 billion global box office success and widespread critical acclaim. According to Glen Powell, the studio has already approved a third movie, though this hasn’t been publicly confirmed yet. If Powell was mistaken, then it’s clear that Paramount is working diligently to persuade Tom Cruise that another Top Gun film is a creatively rewarding project.

Hey fellow gamers! While we’re all eagerly awaiting news about Top Gun 3, let me remind you that you can stream the thrilling sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, with a Paramount+ subscription. As for Lewis Pullman, he’s keeping busy – next up, catch him in Thunderbolts, hitting theaters on May 2, 2025, after his captivating performance in Salem’s Lot.
