As Zathura Turns 20, Kristen Stewart Gushes Over The Jumanji Series, And The One Memory From Filming That She Still Finds ‘Disturbing’

The Jumanji series has found a method to preserve its heritage and grow its mythology for future films. Few may have foreseen that the original Jumanji film would become one of the top science fiction franchises in today’s era. However, certain events boosted the popularity of the franchise, with the movie Zathura being one of them. By expanding the story from the jungle to outer space, Zathura paved the way for future installments. It’s remarkable that Zathura will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025, an event we felt compelled to mention during our interview with Kristen Stewart about her latest movie, Love Me, another foray into sci-fi cinema.

Without a doubt, when you think of Kristen Stewart, you might recall her role as Bella in the Twilight series or associate her with various art house films. However, before she was entwined with sparkly vampires, Kristen Stewart portrayed Lisa, the mischievous older sister in Jon Favreau’s Jumanji spinoff, Zathura. Prior to this role, Stewart had appeared in several major productions, including David Fincher’s Panic Room alongside Jodie Foster (released in 2002). Yet, when she reminisces about her time on the set of Zathura, her feelings are nothing but fond, as she expressed to TopMob in an exclusive interview.

I have a soft spot for John Favreau and Josh Hutcherson. That movie we’re talking about was filled with talent, if you consider it. As kids, we watched it together. Interestingly, it was one of only two times I filmed on a studio lot, although I returned for another project later. It was an incredible experience. It felt like being in a world of make-believe, which was both exciting and a bit intimidating. There were moments when I had to laugh despite myself because the atmosphere was so fun. Given that I wasn’t an easy laugher at that age, it shows how entertaining the whole thing was. The crew from that project remains dear to me. Also, I have a fondness for Jumanji. I find its concept fascinating – a board game with the power to pull you inside.

Initially, it seemed like the film industry was struggling to find suitable roles for Kristen Stewart when she starred as Lisa in the movie “Zathura“. Her character wasn’t the main focus. Instead, the story revolves around the two young boys, played by Jonah Bobo and Josh Hutcherson, who initiate the game. Alongside them, Dax Shepard appears as a rogue astronaut, while Tim Robbins takes on the role of the family’s father.

Perhaps you remember that Stewart’s character is trapped in a frozen state in the movie. Let me show you a short scene to help jog your memory:

Perhaps you recall that Stewart’s character gets stuck being frozen in the film. Here, I’ll share a quick video clip for you to refresh your recollection:

Instead of having Kristen Stewart strike a pose like a stationary statue on set, they created a “statue-like” model of her. In our conversation, I probed about which she found more disconcerting: The cryogenically frozen character Lisa, or the digital personas she brings to life in the upcoming film Love Me. Laughingly, Stewart shared her thoughts on this with TopMob.

Negative, it wasn’t Lisa… or was it? Regardless, I have full cognitive abilities and can recall all events clearly! However, there’s something unsettling about the frozen teenager character, which seems to be stirring up some of my own memories, if you will.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural language and improving readability.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but dream about Sony Pictures celebrating the anniversary of the iconic film “Zathura” in a special way. Ideally, they could link the current Jumanji franchise, starring The Rock and Kevin Hart, with “Zathura” in a significant manner. Can you imagine Dax Shepard’s astronaut character gracing the silver screen once again for another Jumanji escapade? That would certainly stir up a wave of nostalgia while attracting a fresh audience. To top it off, let’s bring Kristen Stewart into the mix – she’s openly expressed her love for the series!

Currently, it’s confirmed that the fourth Jumanji movie, which is connected to The Rock’s series, is scheduled for release on December 11, 2026. However, we don’t have much information about it at this point. As Zathura’s anniversary approaches, we might learn more, so keep an eye out! Stay tuned.
