In the next chapter of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” we venture into unexplored parts of Pandora. Unlike before, where we’ve grown accustomed to vibrant lifeforms, this time we’ll encounter a less lively region. As suggested by the title, we’ll meet a new tribe of Na’vi, the Mangkwan Clan, who inhabit this area. These Na’vi, unlike their previous counterparts, will present a challenge for the Sully family as they serve as new adversaries. However, in typical “Avatar” fashion, things aren’t always clear-cut, so expect to delve into a tragic aspect of Na’vi history that will play a pivotal role in the upcoming sequel, as hinted at by recently unveiled concept art.
In the sequel “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” we’ll traverse uncharted territories on Pandora, encountering areas less bustling with life than we’re used to. The title indicates that we’ll meet a new group of Na’vi, the Mangkwan Clan, who will add to the exploration of the planet. These Na’vi will serve as antagonists for the Sully family, unlike previous depictions. Although “Avatar” usually presents complex narratives, prepare to understand a sorrowful part of Na’vi history that will take center stage in this sequel, as suggested by recently published concept art.
Empire recently revealed an intriguing depiction of Ash Village (see below), a desolate region scarred by a catastrophic natural disaster. Contrasting the usual Pandoran landscape teeming with life and vibrant greenery, this concept art is hauntingly beautiful, rich in details that hint at the abundance that once thrived before the calamity. Dylan Cole, the production designer of Avatar: Fire and Ash, ensured that this part of Pandora conveyed the impression that the Mangkwan Clan have adapted to their barren surroundings, and in turn, have been altered by it as well.
The people of Mangkwan experienced a devastating natural catastrophe, which significantly influenced their culture. Compared to much of Pandora, their world is stark and lifeless. In many ways, they once lived similar lives to the Omatikaya depicted in the first Avatar movie.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Introduces Several New Na’vi Groups
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my anticipation for the upcoming film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash“. Unlike the previous installment, “The Way of Water“, where the Metkayina Na’vi were at the forefront, this time it’s the Mangkwan Clan that takes center stage. The Ash People, led by their formidable leader, Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin (famously known from “Game of Thrones”), are a testament to the resilience and hardship endured by their clan due to a devastating natural disaster. Varang, with her unyielding spirit, embodies the consequences of this tragedy, her heart as tough as the ash-laden land she calls home.
In “Fire and Ash”, Varang’s presence isn’t just about shaking up the conventional “good Na’vi vs bad humans” narrative but also delving into the complexities of individuals who are driven to perform actions that some might consider “evil”, all for the sake of their people’s survival. This intriguing depth promises to enrich the Avatar franchise in ways we haven’t yet imagined.
In the storyline, Varang stands as the chief of a group who have endured severe hardships, shaping her into a tough individual. She’s willing to take extreme measures, including actions that might seem morally questionable to some, for their well-being. One key aspect we aimed to portray in this movie is avoiding oversimplification and black-and-white perspectives. We strive to surpass the stereotype of ‘humans are always wrong, Na’vi are always right’.
In the world of Avatar: Fire and Ash, there are certainly uncharted territories. A thrilling new element introduced in this franchise is the Wind Traders, who navigate on massive creatures resembling airships. Previously, director James Cameron described them as “nomadic traders, much like the camel caravans of the Silk Road during the Middle Ages.” In contrast to the Ash People, it appears that the Wind Traders continue the tradition of adding a new, vibrant aspect to Pandora, rather than focusing solely on despair and destruction.
