It’s disappointing that despite the ongoing discussions about the weakening narrative continuity in Assassin’s Creed, one aspect I find particularly disheartening is the lack of daring storytelling choices, such as unexpected revelations and plot twists. This is especially true when it comes to the complex moral landscape straddled by the two primary factions: the Assassins and the Templars, neither of whom are strictly good or evil.
Reflecting upon it now, revisiting the climactic moments of Assassin’s Creed Rogue on YouTube has made me realize that the franchise could gain from more daring narrative strands. These storylines should provoke discussion among fans and create an indelible impression.
Caution: This piece encompasses plot points from Assassin’s Creed Rogue, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Assassin’s Creed III. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
Here’s why Assassin’s Creed Rogue still has the best plot twist in the series
The Twist
In the game Rogue, it’s well-known that the character we control, Shay Cormac – an Irish Assassin – eventually switches sides to join the Templars, questioning the genuine purpose behind the Assassin’s Creed. This twist was surprising enough, but what really took me aback was his part in assassinating Charles Dorian, who turns out to be Arno Dorian’s father from the game Unity. This action directly paved the way for the events that unfolded in Unity.
Following that major unveiling, nothing seemed more unexpected to me. Despite feeling a hint of anticipation, I never guessed it would be so intricately connected to the larger narrative – much like how Ubisoft’s tales interweave with characters such as Ezio and Altair. Now I find myself pondering where Ubisoft might take their upcoming narratives.
Ubisoft Needs to Take More Risks
The problem lies in Ubisoft’s focus on creating engaging narratives that contribute significantly to the main plot. Instead, recent installments seem more like individual stories within an anthology, lacking consistency even though they take place in the same universe. While exploring ancient open-world cities is exciting, the series could greatly benefit from a more daring narrative style—one that breaks the mold and surprises us.
Exploring the Templars versus Assassins conflict from a profound philosophical standpoint is certainly an intriguing prospect, and I’m confident that Ubisoft’s skilled authors could effectively tackle such a task should they choose to do so.

In recent times, one of the most striking twists that comes close to being exceptional is the Sage storyline from Black Flag. This plot development took me by surprise, especially during the contemporary scenes. I yearned for more of that unexpected twist. Regrettably, none of the subsequent productions have been able to evoke that same sense of surprise.
Basim Was a Step in the Right Direction
In the recent installments of this franchise, one striking revelation caught my attention: the fact that Basim is actually Loki. Admittedly, I wasn’t deeply engrossed in the narrative of Valhalla – the open world felt excessively large and overstuffed, leading me to forget many details of my travels across England and Norway. However, the twist involving Basim was indeed memorable.
Although Basim’s performance was noteworthy, similar to Shay Cormac’s role in Rogue, it didn’t have the same impact because Basim’s actions didn’t lead to any significant developments by the game’s conclusion. This is why I previously suggested that he could benefit from a third appearance in the series to further establish his importance as a key character.
As a passionate gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating Ubisoft’s daring steps in crafting narratives that ripple across their gaming universe. Instead of merely stirring the pot within a single game’s tale, I yearn to witness stories that echo and impact the trajectory of future titles, adding depth and complexity to the entire experience.
Despite some shortcomings in content and combat, Assassin’s Creed Rogue truly shone when managing a complex narrative strand that involved the game’s most prominent factions.
I’ve not completed Assassin’s Creed Shadows as of now, hence I’m unsure about its plot development. However, the adventure of Yasuke and Naoe in Feudal Japan appears intriguing, and I’m excited to discover what surprises are in store for them.
