Assassin’s Creed Shadows: What Do We Know about the Story So Far?

It seems that Ubisoft is heavily influenced by the excitement surrounding “Ghost of Tsushima” and “Shogun”, as they will be releasing their own version of feudal Japan in the “Assassin’s Creed” series this coming March.

What’s known about the plot of “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” so far, considering it’s set to narrate the tale of two characters, one being a real-life historical figure? This is the question at hand.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Story Trailer

Ubisoft recently released a fresh narrative trailer for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” focusing on the bond between the game’s latest character, Naoe, and the enigmatic figure known as Yasuke, the ‘black samurai.’ Take a look!

Japan, 1579 — The country is on a brutal path toward unification driven by the iron will of daimyo Oda Nobunaga. Unrest grows as new coalitions appear and corruptive foreigners infiltrate the land. After the brutal invasion of the peaceful province of Iga, a young shinobi embarks on a journey to fulfill an impossible promise while a legendary samurai finds new purpose confronting the demons of his past.

In this game, the primary characters are Naoe and Yasuke, and players have the ability to alternate between these two characters during gameplay. Unlike Naoe who specializes in stealth operations and assassinations, Yasuke is a frontline combatant and can engage enemies directly.

The Legend of Yasuke

Despite being a fresh character introduced in the game, many players are already acquainted with the tale of Yasuke, the Black Samurai, whose existence is rooted in history. In fact, Yasuke was an African-born samurai who fought under Oda Nobunaga during the 16th century.

Over time, various portrayals of Yasuke have emerged, with his tale serving as a significant influence. It’s been claimed that he was the central inspiration for the anime “Afro Samurai,” and in 2021, Netflix debuted an animated “Yasuke” series from MAPPA studio.

It was rumored that a movie about Yasuke, titled “Black Samurai,” was being developed, with Chadwick Boseman, known for his role as Black Panther, set to star. However, following Boseman’s passing, it seems the production of the film has been halted during development.

Naoe the Shinobi

Reflecting on Naoe, it seems her character could be deeply entwined with the Assassin’s Creed lore. After all, she’s the one wielding the franchise’s legendary Hidden Blade – a weapon that appears in some form in every Assassin’s Creed game.

Initially, it appears that this blade possesses the ability to flex as well, allowing Naoe to employ it not only for hiding but also for striking or thrusting. Essentially, it operates similarly to a typical concealed weapon, with an added feature of flexibility.

From what the trailer suggests, it appears that Naoe’s family has ties to the Brotherhood, yet it seems this narrative could be deeply personal for her, and she may embark on this journey alongside Yasuke.

At the heart of the “Assassin’s Creed” series lies the real history, so “Shadows” promises an engaging perspective on the clandestine activities during the rule of Oda Nobunaga. Since “Ghost of Yotei” is yet to be launched, “Shadows” can serve as a thrilling action experience for those craving feudal Japan adventures.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on March 20 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
