The team at Asobi’s platformer, Astro Bot, has garnered widespread acclaim upon its release. This follow-up to the 2020 tech demo for PlayStation 5, Astro’s Playroom, has been showered with high scores of 9s and perfect 10s. The praise is well-deserved due to its creative level designs, smooth gameplay, and a wealth of classic gaming nostalgia hidden within.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve uncovered hidden gems within Astro Bot’s captivating world – secret levels that each present their own intriguing obstacles. One moment you might be dodging stealthy ninjas lurking in the shadows, and the next, you could find yourself navigating a treacherous course through a colossal Pirate Boss by cannonballing. These elusive levels aren’t always straightforward to discover during your initial adventure, even though some of them are subtly camouflaged among the plain sight attractions.
These mystery portals contain the best easter eggs in the game.
Unlocking the Secret Level Fan Club
The trick to unlocking the first secret level is fairly simple. During the Az-Tech Trail level, after acquiring the Crash Bandicoot mascot, you will encounter a small temple guarded by a giant matryoshka doll.
With your trusty boxing gloves on, defeat the incoming adversaries one by one, then survey the area before tugging at the sticky red material located on the right. You’ll spot four flickering torches. To unveil the hidden section, douse the flames by employing the Ladybug-bot to leap and put them out. Once all four torches are extinguished, the walls will slide open accompanied by a sound effect you’ll eventually grow fond of.
By pressing the square button, you set off a trail that ends at a sparkling disco ball. When activated, a stage with a portal emerges, whisking you away into another world known as the Lost Galaxy.
From there you can enter the Fan Club level containing bots from the iconic Oddworld franchise.
Keep in mind that the ‘Lost Galaxy’ in Astro Bot stands distinct from the five main nebulae available for exploration. It’s worth noting that should you not complete a level before entering, it may transport you away from your current gameplay.
You’ll find ten initial levels to progress through, followed by an ultimate level once you’ve conquered the first ten. Some of these levels may need more than just sharp eyesight to solve; later stages will involve navigating across gaps to gain access.
These, too, differ from the game’s toughest platforming segments found within the puzzles known as the “Lost Voids” in the final stages.
In a casual and straightforward manner: Astro Bot’s Hidden Levels aren’t necessary but provide an enjoyable method to accumulate additional coins. Many of these levels introduce unique bots like Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima and the pair Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us.
