Last month, developer Rebellion introduced a fresh new intellectual property called Atomfall – an intriguing open-world survival action game, which has been garnering positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. Recently, Rebellion disclosed that the game has surpassed 2 million players since its launch, with the studio attributing a significant portion of this success to its simultaneous release on Game Pass for both PC and Xbox platforms.
In an interview with GamesIndustry, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley described the debut of Atomfall on Game Pass as a “huge success.” He viewed it as a “great opportunity” for both the British studio and Microsoft, whom he praised as “excellent collaborators” to work with.
He remarked that the project has been incredibly successful. Working with Microsoft has been a pleasure; they’ve been extremely supportive in helping us achieve our goals. They’ve utilized their expertise and resources effectively on our smaller project, which has proven to be beneficial for both parties.
Discussing the impact of Microsoft’s subscription service, Kingsley highlighted the increased visibility it offers to games and unique intellectual properties (IP), specifically, and how this reduces the hurdles for newcomers to enter the market.
Game Pass allows individuals to experience the game firsthand, which often leads to enjoying it. Those who enjoy it then recommend it to their friends on social media, saying something like ‘I discovered this game through Game Pass, I found it really enjoyable, you should give it a try.’ This encourages others to either subscribe to Game Pass to play or to purchase the game if they don’t already have it.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “Based on our thoughts, it seems that finding new games could be one of the toughest hurdles for companies like ours. Fortunately, Game Pass has been a game-changer, offering us an incredible opportunity to discover a plethora of exciting titles.
Speaking as a devoted fan, I’d like to share some insights from Kingsley regarding Game Pass. He mentioned that this platform has been instrumental in helping our studio manage risks. While it’s true that joining Game Pass might nibble at sales, the benefits outweigh this minor drawback, according to Rebellion’s CEO.
He explained, “Indeed, it reduces risk since it promises a minimum income, regardless of the final selling price. However, there could be unintended consequences. For instance, consider Xbox sales as an example. It’s possible that many dedicated gamers are subscribed to Game Pass and might prefer these services over buying new IPs like this one. In such a case, are we not slightly eroding the market for those who would typically purchase this type of game? Yet, the benefits from this potential loss could outweigh the costs significantly.
