Atomic Monster & Universal Pictures Developing New Mystery Monster Movie — What Could It Be?

As a long-time horror enthusiast and a fan who has grown up watching the chilling tales spun by the Universal Monsters, I am beyond thrilled to witness the masterful James Wan stepping into this hallowed kingdom of terror! The man behind the bone-chilling “Insidious” and the spine-tingling “The Conjuring” is now producing a creature feature that promises an intriguing blend of ancient mythology and modern horror.

Renowned horror filmmaker, James Wan, has officially stepped into the esteemed realm of Universal’s classic monster universe after his projects, M3GAN and Night Swim.

As reported by Deadline, the filmmaker famous for Insidious and The Conjuring is slated to produce an unnamed monster movie through his Atomic Monster label for the studio. Leah McKendrick (known for Scrambled) is expected to pen and direct this enigmatic project, which seems to center around a creature drawn from mythology. Michael Clear and Judson Scott will assume executive producer roles in this production.

McKendrick expressed his excitement on Instagram, saying he’s been a devoted fan of Universal Monsters since his childhood trip to Universal Studios. For him, Halloween Horror Nights is the best night of the year, and he can’t hide his joy as his dreams are finally becoming reality.

As McKendrick, I’m thrilled to be joining the ranks of filmmakers diving into Universal’s modern take on timeless monsters. Following in the footsteps of Leigh Whannell, Chris McKay, André Øvredal, Radio Silence, and others, I’ll be contributing to the revitalization or reimagination of silver screen legends such as The Invisible Man, Renfield, Dracula, Abigail, and the upcoming Wolf Man. Even Wan is pondering a fresh take on The Creature from the Black Lagoon. It’s an exciting time to be part of this monster movie renaissance!

What is James Wan’s new Universal Monster movie about?

At present, no definite plot points have been revealed, and since each country boasts a distinct array of mythical creatures, the unknown beast could range from legendary entities like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, all the way to local tales such as the Fresno Nightcrawler.

In her Instagram post, McKendrick showed the Nicaraguan flag, a tribute to her ancestry and potentially hinting at the film’s future focus. As reported by Nicaragua.com, the country’s most terrifying mythical figure is “La Cegua,” a sorceress capable of causing madness in men and passing through solid objects.

The passage describes her as assuming multiple personas:

I’m afraid it’s mere guesswork for now. Let’s be patient and find out where McKendrick intends to steer the movie. We’ll make sure to inform you as soon as we know more!
