For those unaware, the storyline of the initial “Avatar: The Last Airbender” doesn’t stop at the finale. In fact, it carries on through various comics, offering more insights into the lives of our beloved core benders while also exploring the wider world they inhabit.
In the gaming world of “Ashes of the Academy,” I’ve come to understand that the story unfolds over two years beyond the finale. This is evident as my character, Zuko, doesn’t cross paths with Kiya, his newly discovered sister, until “The Search” – a sequel that starts two years after the original series ended its run. It’s exciting to know that she’ll have a larger part in this new chapter of our favorite show!
In the recently published book, it’s revealed by Dark Horse Publishing Company that Zuko’s younger half-sister, Kiyi, is attending the Royal Fire Academy for Girls. However, Zuko expresses concern over her safety due to both the demanding coursework and the headmaster. To ensure Kiyi thrives academically rather than becoming like Mini-Azulu, who was affected negatively by the academy’s harshness, Zuko arranges for Mai to become a teacher at the school, watching over Kiyi and providing guidance throughout her education.
New Earth Avatar Series (Reportedly 2025)
It’s been quite a while since we received fresh animation from the universe of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” but it looks like our wait might soon come to an end as we anticipate new content by next year. Avatar News announced in late December 2022 that a new series focusing on the new Earth Avatar is slated for premiere on Paramount+ sometime in 2025, given that many Nickelodeon shows air there now.
In terms of the chronology, it’s clear that the events will unfold following the demise of Korra, since only one Avatar can exist at a time. This suggests a new phase in the cycle and focuses on his journey, as hinted by the tantalizing artwork. At this point, no additional details about the narrative have been disclosed, but it certainly piques our curiosity!
Aang: The Last Airbender (January 30th, 2026)
It’s exciting for us all to finally watch our cherished characters grace the screen once more, be it Toph shining brightly or Katara demonstrating her prowess as a waterbender. The moment we’ve been anticipating is upon us – we will now experience this in an extended, full-length movie format.
It’s been confirmed that Paramount is developing several movies within the ATLA universe, with the first one being titled Aang: The Last Airbender. Originally scheduled for release in 2025, Variety reports that the premiere has been rescheduled to 2026. Additionally, it’s been announced that Laura Montgomery will be directing this film.
At CinemaCon 2024, it was announced that Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, and Dave Bautista will lend their voices to characters in the film. Among them, Eric Nam is Aang, Dionne Quan is Toph, Jessica Matten is Katara, Román Zaragoza is Sokka, and Dave Bautista portrays an antagonist. Interestingly, it was not revealed that the original voice actors would be reprising their roles. However, since this movie is set in the future, it’s logical to assume that new voices are being used.
Beyond this, we’re unsure of the specific plot; it will primarily focus on Aang and his companions. Truthfully, that’s more than enough for us.
Netflix’s Live-Action Avatar: The Next Airbender Season 2 (TBA)
It’s clear that Netflix has confirmed both Season 2 and the final Season 3 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. These upcoming seasons will continue Aang’s storyline, as he progresses in mastering the elements in his battle against the Fire Lord, a journey we’ve all followed in the animated series.
I’ve designated TBA as the timeframe for the storyline since the showrunners have hinted at a time jump due to the actors maturing in the live-action series, leaving some uncertainty about how much time has elapsed. However, we can expect Aang’s journey to continue with his mastery of earthbending, as confirmed by Toph’s casting. Additionally, there may be more instances of waterbending as well.
At the moment, we don’t have an exact release date, but rest assured, we’re keeping close tabs on things. As Netflix’s Tudum reports, production is still underway, which suggests that a definitive release date announcement isn’t far off.
Honorable Mentions: Two More Avatar Universe Films And The Next Roku Novel (Rumored)
I’ve listed these two as honorable mentions as they seem uncertain for now, so let me explain. According to Entertainment Weekly’s announcement in June 2022, there are indeed two more ATLA films on the way. However, since that announcement, no further details about their progress have been shared.
There’s been a lot of speculation regarding who the main character might be – Zuko, Korra, or someone else – but no one has officially announced it yet. We don’t know when it will be released either. All we can do is wait and find out. However, we do know that the other two films will tell different stories compared to “Aang: The Last Airbender,” so that’s something to look forward to.
The second thing is the rumored next Roku novel. For those who don’t know, there have been a series of ongoing books about the former Avatars that have come out, covering the stories of both Kyoshi and Yancheng, all of which have several novels. Avatar Roku’s first novel, The Reckoning of Roku, was released on July 23, 2024.
A Reddit post by user Lasernatoo displayed an image hinting at the upcoming title of the next Roku novel, “The Awakening of Roku,” which seems to have been unveiled at a gathering. However, there’s no official confirmation yet. We’ll keep you informed as more details emerge.
