Patient MCU fans learned which Avengers would face the next Thanos-level threat this week.
Disney’s extended reveal showcased a massive ensemble for “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for release in theaters in 2026.
In the upcoming movie, characters such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Ant Man (Paul Rudd), and the latest incarnation of Captain America (Anthony Mackie) will face off against Doctor Doom (Robert Downey, Jr.). Additionally, other superheroes are expected to make an appearance, including many members of the Thunderbolts team, like Florence Pugh and David Harbour.
The X-Men will be well represented by stars Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Patrick Stewart.
Given that “Avengers: Endgame” bid farewell to both Iron Man and Captain America, it’s highly unlikely that they will engage in a battle with Doctor Doom in the subsequent film.
So what about these missing heroes?
The Hulk
In simpler terms, Mark Ruffalo’s gritty and eco-friendly character has significantly contributed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storyline as part of the “Avengers” series. Recently, Ruffalo has been more open to working with the MCU despite his busy schedule. So, what led to this change?
Hawkeye
Jeremy Renner’s character doesn’t possess superhuman strength, but his courage fueled several memorable scenes as an Avenger. Could his near-fatal accident in 2023 potentially limit his ability to portray the role physically in future productions? Given his impressive recovery, it seems challenging for him to continue in strenuous superhero films.
Doctor Strange
In certain “Avengers: Infinity War” scenes, it seemed as though Benedict Cumberbatch’s character could defeat Thanos alone, showcasing just how potent his abilities are. Despite not making any negative comments about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his absence is noticeable. However, he has confirmed that his character will reappear in the second part of the two-part series, “Avengers: Secret Wars.
Spider-Man
In the movie “Infinity War,” Tom Holland’s character Spider-Man played a significant part in the battle against Thanos. Moreover, he added an entertaining twist to “Captain America: Civil War.” Notably, his solo appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe have earned him widespread popularity. However, one might wonder why he isn’t joining forces again to combat a fresh intergalactic peril?
Scarlett Witch
Elizabeth Olsen initially made her mark in independent films such as “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Subsequently, she gained prominence by portraying the Scarlet Witch in various Marvel productions, including “WandaVision” on Disney+. On-screen, she was romantically involved with The Vision, mirroring their relationship in the Marvel comics. However, during the last Avengers film, Vision met his demise. Despite this, there was no issue with her involvement in the upcoming project as it didn’t contradict established canon. Why wouldn’t that be the case?
She-Hulk
Despite the controversy surrounding Tatiana Maslany’s role in the Disney+ series, there hasn’t been a follow-up season announced yet. Some criticized the series for its unstable FX and progressive storylines. However, many thought she would be perfect for an Avengers upgrade. Unfortunately, it seems that won’t happen.
Captain Marvel
Brie Larson quickly became the most debated character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film “Captain Marvel,” released in 2019, was a financial success but raised questions about whether Larson’s Academy Award-winning acting style was well-suited for the series. Unfortunately, her subsequent appearance in “The Marvels” in 2023 didn’t go as planned, leading to many understanding why she wasn’t present in future installments.
The Wasp
In “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” Evangeline Lilly discovered her own hero within, elevating to Avengers level in “Endgame.” However, for the upcoming movie, “Doomsday,” Ant-Man, played by Paul Rudd, returns, but Evangeline Lilly’s name is absent from the current roster.
It’s quite unexpected. Could it be connected to the actress’s public opposition to COVID-19 vaccines over the past few years, which she openly discussed with media in 2023? Given her stance, I wonder if Marvel Studios still supports her as they did before.
