Avengers: Doomsday Could Bring Namor and Sue Storm Romance Plot to the MCU

On March 26, 2025, Marvel Studios chose an unusual method to reveal the cast for the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” Instead of a traditional press conference or announcement, they opted for a live stream where chairs with the actors’ names were unveiled every 15 to 20 minutes. The event was both thrilling and puzzling. As each new name was announced, more of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future began to unfold.

The second actor revealed was Vashti Puryear, who will portray Sue Storm, also known as The Invisible Woman, in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” However, a name that likely took many by surprise was the announcement of Tenoch Huerta Mejía reprising his role as Namor.

In 2022, Namor made his debut in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” within the MCU, but since then, there have been no updates regarding the character’s future plans. This is partly because Marvel Studios doesn’t hold the solo film rights for Namor. However, the announcement that Namor and Invisible Woman will appear together in a movie has comic book enthusiasts excited. Despite Sue Storm being married to Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), their relationship with Namor forms part of one of Marvel Comics’ most famous and intricate love triangles.

The potential blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday might surpass all previous Marvel films in scale, but by incorporating characters like Namor and The Invisible Woman, coupled with the anticipated comeback of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, this upcoming movie could make Marvel’s productions more passionate than ever.

The Reed Richards/Sue Storm/Namor Love Triangle in the Comics, Explained

As a devoted fan of Marvel Comics, I’ve always been fascinated by the deep-rooted bond between Namor and the Fantastic Four, particularly Sue Storm. Way back in 1939, Namor was born into the comic world through the creative minds of writer-artist Bill Everett, debuting in Marvel Comics #1, marking the beginning of Timely Comics, later to be known as Marvel Comics following the creation of The Fantastic Four in the 60s. Namor, being one of their earliest superheroes, played a pivotal role in ushering in the modern Marvel era. He made his comeback in The Fantastic Four #4, published in May 1962.

Ever since he re-entered the Marvel Comics universe, Namor has been irresistibly drawn to Sue Storm and has even persistently pursued her. Despite being an adversary to the Fantastic Four and frequently clashing with the team, Namor has always held a tender spot for Sue Storm.

Sue’s emotions towards Namor are intricate, without a doubt. She acknowledges a pull towards him and occasionally finds herself attracted when her husband, Reed Richards, seems preoccupied with his work. However, in the primary universe, their loyalty to each other has been unwavering, and Sue never abandoned Reed for Namor. This was evident during the “Civil War,” where they were apart but remained committed. Namor himself mentioned that their connection was unique when Sue visited Atlantis to persuade him to align with Captain America’s faction.

Sue: “What are you talking about? We don’t have a relationship.”

Namor: “I sense your heartbeat beneath the water, Mrs. Richards…and it paints a tale that contradicts the falsehoods coming from you.

Despite Reed Richards occasionally being engrossed in his work, his affection for his family, particularly Susan Storm, is unwavering. Reed respects Namor greatly due to his role as the ruler of an underwater kingdom and they’ve collaborated frequently. However, Reed harbors doubts about Namor’s intentions concerning Susan and has vocalized his concerns on several occasions.

In Marvel Knights 4 issue #8 from July 2004, the character Namor emerges from beneath the waves in an attempt to charm Sue Storm into abandoning her husband and moving to Atlantis. However, Sue Storm reminisces about her past affinity for Namor as nothing more than a fascination with royalty, similar to a young girl who enjoys Jane Austen novels. She goes on to explain that times have changed significantly since then, emphasizing that everything is different now.

Regardless of Namor’s repeated expressions of longing, Sue turns down his advances. As Reed Richards happens upon them during their discussion in a museum, he believes Sue is innocent, but his masculine pride overpowers him. Even with his vast intellect, Reed Richards isn’t immune to primal emotions like jealousy. He lashes out at Namor, belittling him as a parasitic fish, and the two end up in a brawl that spills over into the next issue. In the end, Reed openly shows his annoyance towards Namor, who persistently pursues Sue Storm.

Sue supports her spouse, demonstrating that she and Reed function harmoniously as a team. While there may still be residual feelings towards Namor, it is clear that her deepest affections lie with Mr. Fantastic, making him her top choice. However, the Reed Richards, Sue Storm, and Namor love triangle has not been fully resolved in Marvel Comics, as the storyline continues to explore the tension between Sue’s love for Reed and her lingering emotions towards Namor.

Significantly, events unfold differently for Namor and Sue in various storylines. For instance, in the non-canonical mini-series titled “Fantastic Four 1 2 3 4,” Sue shares a kiss with Namor during a difficult period in her marriage to Reed, but their relationship does not progress beyond that point. In the series “Fantastic Four: Life Story” #2, which depicts The Fantastic Four gaining their powers and aging as they would in real life based on the original comics, Sue leaves Reed Richards for approximately a decade during the 1970s to be with Namor due to her dissatisfaction with him being overly engrossed in his work.

Will the MCU Adapt This Romance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Title “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has been confirmed to occur in a reality separate from the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline. Some fans predict that their MCU movie will conclude with the destruction of their reality, leaving the team displaced and residing within the MCU reality. Others anticipate that the conclusion of “Avengers: Secret Wars” will merge all realities into a single, unified Marvel timeline, where The Fantastic Four have always existed. This convergence would’ve been an ideal opportunity for Namor to encounter The Fantastic Four; however, these encounters are now happening earlier than expected.

The news that The Fantastic Four and Namor will appear in Avengers: Doomsday brings up some intriguing points, specifically whether the MCU will delve into Marvel Comics’ initial love triangle scenario. Though titled Avengers: Doomsday, this film seems more akin to a Fantastic Four production, as not only are the four superheroes present with Namor, but Doctor Doom, their primary adversary, serves as the main antagonist.

In the early stages of their encounters, as depicted in Fantastic Four issue 6 from September 1962, Doctor Doom and Namor crossed paths. Interestingly, Namor refused to ally with Doctor Doom because he wished to spare Sue Storm from harm. Although MCU’s Namor hasn’t met Sue Storm yet, it’s imaginable that the Russo brothers could portray Sue Storm as a wise voice who persuades Namor to join forces with the heroes in a struggle against Doom. This scenario could pave the way for their future romantic involvement.

A key aspect that could influence the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) portrays Namor’s feelings for Sue Storm is how the MCU has previously depicted him. In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Namor was presented with strong anti-colonial sentiments, making it seem improbable that he would develop romantic feelings towards a character like Sue Storm, given her blonde hair and blue eyes. The potential representation of Namor, played by a Mexican actor, falling for Sue Storm might raise some questionable implications, as she is a white woman. If the MCU decides to pursue this path, it will likely require some adjustments, but it remains possible.

It appears that a film as grand as “Avengers: Doomsday” (with its cast yet to be fully revealed) might incorporate an element such as Namor’s fascination with Sue Storm. However, Marvel Studios could be subtly setting up a larger narrative that could unfold over several films. “Avengers: Doomsday” is hinted to mark a fresh start for the MCU, and perhaps the potential danger Namor poses to the union between Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman could introduce new layers of tension to be explored further in future “Fantastic Four” movies.

In the “Twilight Saga”, the audience was deeply engaged as they picked sides between Team Edward and Team Jacob, sparking massive box office success and fervent fan reactions. Similarly, Pedro Pascal, known for his role in the MCU as Mr. Fantastic, finds himself in a buzzworthy love triangle. Already, fans of Celine Song’s “Materialist” film are debating whether Dakota Johnson’s character should end up with Pascal or Chris Evans’ characters. The ongoing fan engagement like this is what the MCU currently lacks and could reintroduce the romantic tension and drama that the franchise needs to revitalize.

Prior to Peter Parker facing the dilemma between Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, the love triangle involving Sue Storm, her husband Reed Richards, and the underwater monarch Namor was the initial one. Now, it seems like the intricate love story might be unfolding on the big screen with “Avengers: Doomsday“, which is slated for release on May 1, 2026.
