Avowed may run on a 9-year-old GPU, but Steam Deck looks like a no-go unless you like sub-30fps upscaled at minimum settings

The new RPG from Obsidian, titled Avowed, is truly a precious find, but remember, it’s not designed for portable play. Unfortunately, based on Nick Evanson’s hardware analysis of Avowed and its performance on the ASUS ROG Ally, and my own observations on the Steam Deck, the game runs suboptimally at best on these handheld devices.

Avowed remains tagged with an “unknown” Steam Deck compatibility rating on its store page, but I decided to give it a shot and see if it could be stretched to a playable frame rate on the handheld. Its minimum required GPU, the GTX 1070, came out all the way back in 2016, and recent RPGs with 10-series minimum specs like Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Elden Ring have all been able to hit 30fps on the Deck. Unfortunately, Avowed is not joining their ranks.

In simpler terms, I was experiencing slow gameplay with all settings at minimum and FSR enabled, resulting in about 20-25 frames per second. This performance made engaging in combat unappealing. Reducing the resolution below the Switch’s native 1280×800 might improve it further, but at that point, we’re getting into territory that feels quite subpar compared to even the least optimized Nintendo Switch games.

While Avowed is optimized to run at 30fps on Xbox Series consoles, it requires a GTX 1070, which is more powerful than the minimum requirements for many other games. However, even with these specs, you can enjoy a smooth gaming experience on your desktop, especially when playing at medium-high settings and 1440p with an RTX 3070. For a comprehensive look at Avowed’s performance across different hardware configurations and resolutions, you might want to read Nick’s detailed analysis of the game’s performance.
