Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich Dive Into Cult Fandom in Trailer for A24 Horror Movie ‘Opus’

In the trailer for the A24 horror film titled “Opus,” Ayo Edebiri uncovers that the supposedly glamorous life of John Malkovich as a pop music star is not what it appears to be.

Movie director Mark Anthony Green’s new film will open in cinemas on March 14 after its upcoming debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27. The cast also includes Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino and Tatanka Means.

As a devoted admirer, I found myself immersed in the narrative of “Opus,” where I, as a young writer, was tasked with meeting the elusive pop star Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), who’d vanished without a trace for three decades. Upon my arrival, I soon discovered that Moretti was not just an idol, but an obsession for those in his orbit, fueling his sinister schemes.

In the trailer, I (Edebiri) ask Malkovich, “So, what’s your game plan here?” To which he replies, “Shall we play a round instead?

In this movie, Green makes his first attempt at directing a feature film, a project he personally wrote and guided. The team of Joshua Bachove, Collin Creighton, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, and Brad Weston worked together to produce the film.

Edibiri is famed for her Emmy-winning performance in the FX series “The Bear”. Her film credits span “Theater Camp”, “Bottoms” and “Omni Loop”, as well as voice roles in “Inside Out 2”, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”. In the future, she’ll be seen in Luca Guadagnino’s movie “After the Hunt”, sharing screen time with Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.

More recently, Malkovich has been featured in the television series “Ripley” and movies like “Fool’s Paradise” and the upcoming production titled “The Fantastic Four: Initial Leap.
