After the unveiling of the Asia Culture Center (ACC) Future Prize winner, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is showcasing a fresh solo exhibition by artist Ayoung Kim titled “Delivery Dancer’s Arc: Inverse“. This exhibit expands on Kim’s exploration of science fiction, futurism, and archaeology in a complex video and sculptural series.
In this extensive setup, Kim creates a clock-like structure that pulsates based on mathematical patterns, thereby introducing a unique tempo for time. At the heart of the gallery stands a triangular monitor, inviting viewers into an electronic realm of LED lights and debris. Employing advanced AI, the artist skillfully visualizes future concepts, not only in its design but also in its essence.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to delve deeper into the backstory of the Delivery Dancer, finding myself caught up in a cosmic struggle that transcends both space and time. The intriguing show, Inverse, brings to light the overlooked calendar systems of yesteryears, defying the global norm. Peering through the kaleidoscope of time, I, Kim, ponder over the intricate dance between tradition and modernity. I’m on a quest to uncover forgotten philosophies that have been overshadowed in the realm of contemporary art, creating space for diverse worlds to coexist.
The ACC Prize reflects an effort to comprehend contemporary issues and usher a new era of expansive imagination in art. Embodying this mission, Kim approaches modernity with friction and nuance, bearing witness to the animacy of future tense.
The “Inverted Delivery Dancer’s Arc” exhibit is currently on display at the National Asian Culture Center in Gwangju until February 16, 2025. Additionally, a prequel titled “Delivery Dancer’s Sphere” will be featured at the Ewha Media Art Presentation x Frieze event in Seoul from now until September 6, 2024.
