Over the last fortnight, “Back in Action” has been leading on Netflix. After working together in “Annie” six years ago, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz reprise their roles as a married couple who are once again thrust into the world of espionage when their identities are exposed. Despite “Back in Action” maintaining its position within the Netflix Top Ten, an unexpected film has snuck up to No. 2.
Despite receiving harsh criticism from critics and a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 27%, it’s not surprising that the 2025 Netflix movie Back in Action has garnered high ratings from subscribers. This is because the film, which sees the return of Cameron Diaz after a decade-long retirement from acting and Jamie Foxx who has recently recovered from a “medical complication,” feels like a reflection of real life. With both stars making a comeback, it’s only natural that fans would be eager to watch them in an enjoyable, entertaining movie.
Despite no longer being the top choice for Netflix subscribers, “Back in Action” remains strong at the No. 3 spot. If you’re intrigued about the movie that displaced it from the top position, it might surprise you to learn that it’s not another Netflix Original. In fact, the second most-watched film on Netflix is the action-thriller “American Renegades”.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder why so many folks seem to favor “American Renegades” over “Back in Action.” With Sullivan Stapleton from down under and the esteemed J.K. Simmons, it’s hard to imagine a more promising cast. Yet, it seems critics on Rotten Tomatoes have had their fill of it, labeling it as “messy,” “aggressively dumb,” and “mostly senseless action.” The consensus was clear: it was a rotten 11% on the Tomatometer and 40% on the Popcornmeter.
Because American Renegades joined Netflix’s content library on February 1st, it’s possible that many Netflix users found the 2017 movie intriguing due to its exciting plot about Navy SEALS recovering Nazi gold hidden in a Bosnian lake vault. Moreover, the film benefits from J.K. Simmons’s renowned performances and the co-writing of Luc Besson, who is known for Taken. Given these factors, it seems plausible that Netflix subscribers would be interested in giving American Renegades a try.
It’s clear that “Back in Action” ranks third and “American Renegades” is just ahead. The question then becomes, which film has outranked both of these movies at the number one spot? That would be “The Menu,” a top movie from 2022. This horror-comedy was quite the delight (pun intended), given its impressive position on Netflix’s Top 10 list, considering the quality of the film. Ralph Fiennes stars in this production, where a young couple embarks on a journey to a secluded island, only to find that the renowned chef hosting them there has a chilling message about food appreciation – revenge is indeed best served cold. Whether you’re planning to watch it during dinner or with a bag of fresh popcorn, be warned: this Golden Globe-nominated film might leave you craving for more!
The less acclaimed “American Renegades” managed to secure the second spot on the Netflix Top 10 list, surpassing “Back in Action.” This indicates that audiences continue to favor fast-paced, action-packed movies, regardless of critic reviews. If you’re a fan of films currently trending within the Netflix Top Ten, don’t miss out and watch them now!
