‘Back to the Future’ Co-Creator Isn’t Interested in a Fourth Movie and Is Focused on the Musical Instead

The Back to the Future films have stopped at three.

Backstage at the Saturn Awards, Bob Gale, known for jointly creating and writing the iconic 80s movies with Robert Zemeckis, was queried about any aspirations that remain unfulfilled despite his significant achievements in the franchise.

Gale said, “I’m living my best third act of life, better than anyone could ever dream up,” as the cast of the film, including Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson, nodded in agreement. When people ask about a fourth Back to the Future movie, they say, “We might as well tell them ‘Drop it!’ or something like that, because I wouldn’t want you quoting me on that!

Gale went on to say, “We created three fantastic films that left audiences wanting more ‘Back to the Future’. To fulfill their demand, we turned it into a musical called ‘Back to the Future: The Musical‘ and plan to take it worldwide.

The creator remarked that not only was the movie’s musical version touring North America, but it also intended to debut in Japan, Germany, Australia, and on Royal Caribbean Cruises. “Oh, Back to the Future,” he exclaimed, “I’ll be performing it for the remainder of my days. What more could I ask for?

The musical adaptation of “Back to the Future,” which was nominated for two Tony Awards, recently ended its run on Broadway after a 18-month stay at the Winter Garden Theatre. During this time, it generated a total of $1.9 million.

In its review, The Hollywood Reporter praised the Broadway show as an entertaining and humorous tale that translates almost equally well to the stage as it did to the screen. The reviewer particularly commended the technical aspects of the production, such as stunning visual projections, special effects, and inventive sound and lighting designs, which create a theme-park-like atmosphere. Among all Broadway shows that emulate a theme park, this one stands out as exceptionally impressive. The Winter Garden’s expansive interior is adorned with captivating lighting and video projections, making viewers feel like they’re immersed in a massive computer simulation.

The musical is currently playing at the West End for its fourth year.
