Back to the Future Writer Slams Door on Sequels and Spinoffs—Here’s Why Fans Shouldn’t Hold Out

The last episode of “Cobra Kai” subtly revealed a clue suggesting possible growth for the well-known ’80s series in a new medium, as it has seldom been adapted for television. With such anticipation among viewers, they eagerly awaited this potential expansion.

In a brief appearance, filmmakers Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz discussed the possibility of a new Back to the Future sequel. However, original screenwriter Bob Gale firmly reiterated his disinterest in furthering the franchise. “I can’t understand why they keep bringing it up!” he expressed. “Are they under the impression that if they mention it enough, we’ll eventually give in?

Gale explained, “People always ask in interviews, ‘Bob, when will there be a sequel, prequel, or spinoff?’ The answer is always the same: never. It’s already great just the way it is. Although it’s not flawless, Bob Zemeckis once said, ‘It’s good enough.’

If the relentless force of global corporations threatens, “If you don’t go along with this, we’ll harm your children,” clearly, no one wants their children harmed. Even so, Steven Spielberg needs to approve it as well. And let me tell you, just like Steven wouldn’t create another E.T., he understands that we don’t desire more Back to the Future either. He comprehends and has always supported our stance, and I appreciate him for that.

Gale seems to oppose a remake of “Back to the Future,” as he feels the original movies remain significant and impactful. He explained, “[It’s wonderful] to see a new generation appreciating this, [and realizing], ‘Wow, my parents were kids once too.'” This enduring appeal, according to him, is due to every child eventually reaching that realization, and since our movie captures that moment, it continues to resonate with audiences. So, he enjoys witnessing the film’s rediscovery by new viewers.

Back to the Future Lives On In Musical Form

Although it may not receive further installments, the franchise of “Back to the Future” surprisingly ventured into a musical genre. Specifically, “Back to the Future: The Musical,” penned by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, garnered significant praise and was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022.

Gale expressed his excitement to People, saying, “We unveiled it in Tokyo, and the enthusiasm for Back to the Future is just as intense, if not more so, compared to other places.” He continued, “I’m truly amazed by how well Bob [Zemeckis] and I created something that has endured this much.

All three Back to the Future movies are streaming on Netflix.
