Bade Miyan Chote Miyan producer Vashu Bhagnani files case against Netflix India for ‘cheating’ amidst non-payment controversy

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the drama and intrigue that often unfolds within the world of Bollywood, I must say it’s quite a spectacle to witness Vashu Bhagnani’s latest predicament. It seems that this year has been nothing short of a whirlwind for Mr. Bhagnani, with one controversy after another.

Film producer Vashu Bhagnani is in another difficult situation. This time, the filmmaker who faced accusations for non-payment by director Ali Abbas Zafar from Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, claims that Netflix India has deceived him. The head of Pooja Entertainment emphasizes that he is still waiting to receive a payment amounting to approximately 47.37 crore rupees.

In an interview with The Economic Times, Vashu Bhagnani alleged that the OTT platform had ‘cheated and conspired against the rights’ of his latest three films: Hero No 1, Mission Raniganj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. He lodged a complaint against Los Gatos Production Services India—Netflix’s content investment arm in the country—along with Zoo Digital India and several executives from both companies. The report added Economic Offences Wing (EOW) summoned executives of Los Gatos Production Services India.

This year, Vashu Bhagnani has found himself in several heated discussions. The recent underperformance of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has led members of its production team to accuse him of failing to pay their dues. Earlier this month, even the film’s director voiced his concerns, stating that Bhagnani had not paid his fee of approximately 73 million rupees. In a counterclaim, Vashu and Jackky Bhagnani from Pooja Entertainment lodged a complaint against Ali Abbas Zafar, alleging that he misused subsidy funds received from Abu Dhabi authorities during the movie’s production.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share this astonishing revelation: The Bhagnanis have levied some heavy allegations against Zafar, claiming he orchestrated a staggering 95 crore rupees worth of fraud! Incredibly, they’ve accused him of not just simple fraud, but also coercion, breach of trust, extortion, blackmail, intimidation, harassment, defamation, and money laundering. To top it off, they allege that he manipulated the funds by channeling them through a shadow company in Abu Dhabi. Quite the whirlwind of accusations!

A June 2024 report stated that, Federation of Western India Cine Employees President BN Tiwari disclosed that Bhagnani owes Rs 33.13 lakh to Mission Raniganj director Tinu Suresh Desai. Under Desai’s contract with Pooja Entertainment, he received Rs 3,70,36,092 out of a total of Rs 4,03,50,000 from the production company. Tiwari mentioned that the federation has been pursuing the matter with Bhagnani’s firm, but the dues remain unpaid.

The report also revealed that film producer Vashu Bhagnani still hadn’t paid the salaries of approximately 250 crew members who worked on his films. At that point in time, he owed them a total of around 31.78 lakhs for their contributions to Mission Raniganj, Ganapath, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan productions.
