In spite of the turmoil caused by the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires, the Academy Awards Ceremony for its 97th edition is still planned to occur in Hollywood on March 2nd, Sunday.
Indeed, they too, at the British Academy BAFTA in London, are keeping a close eye on this disturbance as well.
Or more conversational:
They’re not ignoring it either, you know – even the folks over at the BAFTA in London are paying attention to what’s going on.
Anna Higgs, chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, spoke to THR on Wednesday as the BAFTA Film Awards nominations were announced, with Edward Berger’s Vatican drama ‘Conclave’ taking the lead. She noted that our team at BAFTA North America is relatively compact yet powerful. It consists of an executive group, members of our board, and numerous academics. Above all, she expressed her concerns for them.
Regarding how the wildfires affect BAFTA participants, she commented: “The situation is constantly changing, from minute to minute, let alone day by day. Some members are directly affected and might have been unable to vote in the second round. However, we’ve made sure they can still cast their votes in the third round. The peculiarities of our industry often mean that members can’t vote because they’re busy working on sets or filming, among other things.
Higgs has announced that she will be addressing the ongoing fires in a message to BAFTA members on Wednesday. In her email, which includes the nominations and is being sent out today, she expresses sympathy and good wishes to all academics affected by the fires. She personally knows some individuals who have lost their homes, making the situation very personal for her. The community impacted is a tight-knit one.
Is there any indication that the upcoming BAFTA awards ceremony will take steps to acknowledge or help with the L.A. wildfires? Given that the event is still a month away, it’s not yet possible to make any concrete plans regarding this matter. However, we are closely monitoring the situation and doing our best to assist our BAFTA team and members in Los Angeles during this challenging time.
