As an ardent fan of captivating performances and strong storytelling, I find myself deeply moved by Meher Vij’s journey as an actress and her unwavering commitment to portraying empowered characters on screen. Her experiences with typecasting after her roles in Secret Superstar and Bajrangi Bhaijaan resonate with me, as I too yearn for the day when we see more diverse and strong female roles that break away from stereotypes.
As a dedicated follower, I can’t help but express my admiration for the remarkable film Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, released in 2015. This movie brought then-newcomer Harshaali Malhotra into the limelight, sharing the screen with Salman Khan. More recently, actress Meher Vij reflected on her experience being stereotyped as a mother following her roles in films such as the Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer, as well as Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar. She passionately declared that she has no desire to witness women being portrayed in submissive roles.
In a recent chat with NDTV, I, Meher Vij, fondly recall the opportunities that came my way following Secret Superstar. Yet, there were certain film roles I yearned to play but somehow missed out on securing them.
Meher expressed that she strives to avoid being a one-dimensional actress, constantly repeating specific character types. As she reminisced about her journey, the actress who starred in Secret Superstar mentioned that the producers often confined her to certain role categories when providing acting opportunities.
Meher articulated her decision by stating, “I declined those parts, saying, ‘I don’t feel like taking on this role. I’m not here just to portray a specific type of character. I aspire to embody stronger personalities.’ It’s my preference; I don’t want to see women cast in weak roles.
In a recent statement, the 38-year-old actress made it clear that although her character in Bajrangi Bhaijaan was not a stereotypically weak role, it remains essential for female performers to pursue action-oriented roles more frequently.
In the same vein, Meher Vij recalled the incident where she secured the role in Salman Khan’s movie, Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Meher mentioned that she was engaged in shooting an advertisement when casting director Mukesh Chhabra contacted her for the role in Kabir Khan’s production.
The actress shared that she subsequently met with the production team, who inquired if the mole below her eye was genuine. Upon asking about this query herself, she learned that director Kabir Khan had brought up the topic of her mole.
Meher remembered that she indeed verified the mole was genuine and ultimately secured the part as Munni’s mother Razia, opposite Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in a movie. The actress disclosed that she didn’t discuss with Kabir Khan why he requested the mole. Meher speculated that perhaps the mole caught their attention or contributed to her character in the 2015 production.
In the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Salman Khan portrayed Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi. Kareena Kapoor took on the role of Rasika Pandey. Harshaali Malhotra was chosen for the character of Shahida Aziz, who is also known as Munni. The film also showcased notable performances by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sharat Saxena, and Om Puri in significant roles.
In 2017, the movie Secret Superstar featured Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim. Zaira played Insia Malik, a teenager with dreams of becoming a singer, while Aamir portrayed Shakti Kumar, a music director living in Mumbai. The film was directed by Advait Chandan, and Meher took on the role of Nazma Malik, Insia’s mother in this coming-of-age tale.
Besides starring in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Secret Superstar, Meher Vij has also appeared in films such as Lucky: No Time for Love, Tum Bin II, Bhoot: Part One – The Haunted Ship, and Maharaj. More recently, Meher took on the lead role in Bandaa Singh Chaudhary, a movie that features Arshad Warsi in its title character.
2024 saw the unveiling of a cinematic masterpiece, “Bandaa Singh Chaudhary,” directed by the visionary Abhishek Saxena. As an ardent admirer, I couldn’t contain my excitement as I watched this action-drama unfold on the big screen. Produced by none other than Arbaaz Khan, it was a testament to the power of storytelling and a must-watch for film enthusiasts like myself.
