Ballerina Director Len Wiseman Says Reshoots Were To Replace Cut Scenes

As a seasoned cinema connoisseur with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I have to say that the upcoming ‘Ballerina’ spinoff of the revered ‘John Wick’ franchise has piqued my interest significantly. The return of Ana de Armas as a titular assassin, along with the reappearance of Keanu Reeves and other familiar faces from the main series, promises an enthralling continuation of the ‘John Wick’ legacy.

In recent months, there’s been a lot of buzz online about the upcoming “John Wick” spinoff featuring as the main character. This was due to rumors that the film had undergone significant reshoots. It was speculated that franchise architect Chad Stahelski had taken over some directorial responsibilities from Len Wiseman, but this wasn’t entirely accurate. Now, Wiseman has provided a clear explanation for the additional shooting.

The John Wick series has featured standout performances by actors like Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Halle Berry, and others, with each movie outperforming the last in terms of box office success. However, the spinoff prequel series The Continental didn’t live up to expectations for some viewers. Now, there is a lot of anticipation for Ana de Armas to carry on the franchise’s cinematic triumphs. Initially, it appeared that these lofty expectations might not be met, and additional filming was needed for certain action sequences. As Wiseman shared with Empire magazine, though, there was an additional reason for going back for more shooting. Wiseman revealed the explanation:

Instead of reshoots, it was extra filming we did. Due to budget limitations, we had to eliminate certain scenes from the script initially, but we received additional funding to re-add those scenes, and for good measure, we wanted to make things even more enjoyable.

Can ‘Ballerina’ Continue ‘John Wick’s Legacy?

Both Wiseman and Stahelski have previously mentioned their aim to create a film that honors the reputation of the John Wick franchise. Although Stahelski has largely dismissed the possibility of John Wick 5, the setting that Reeves’ assassin inhabits remains active. If Ballerina achieves success, it might increase the likelihood of further stories set in this world being explored.

In the continuation of the John Wick series, a new film spotlights a character previously glimpsed in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, portrayed by Ana de Armas. This fresh assassin embarks on a personal quest for vengeance, leading to a temporary encounter with Wick once more, who is reprised by Keanu Reeves. The movie promises to delve deeper into the enigmatic and lethal academy featured in the third installment, set between it and John Wick Chapter 4 within the series’ narrative timeline.

In the movie “Ballerina”, some familiar faces from the John Wick series reappear. Alongside Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane returns as Winston, and Lance Reddick, though sadly no longer with us, will again portray Charon. However, Ana de Armas is the leading lady in this film, having already captivated audiences with her roles in No Time to Die, Ghosted, and The Grey Man. With her proven ability to hold an audience’s attention for a couple of hours in action-packed thrillers, she is poised to shine in this movie. After numerous postponements, Ballerina is now slated for a cinema release on June 6, 2025.
