As an ardent follower of the dynamic world of cinema, I find myself deeply intrigued by the behind-the-scenes happenings of the much-anticipated spinoff from the John Wick franchise, Ballerina. The news that Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the first four John Wick movies, has reportedly reshot most of the film, rather than just additional action scenes as initially suggested, is a testament to the high standards set by this action-packed series.
When a studio postpones a movie release, it often sparks speculation about issues with the film. Sometimes, the schedule is adjusted to dodge tough competition, and other times, adjustments are made based on audience feedback during test screenings to ensure a polished final product. It seems that the latter may be true for the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, now titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Earlier reports suggested that Chad Stahelski, the lead producer and mastermind behind the John Wick franchise, was filming additional action sequences for the movie. However, recent news suggests that Stahelski may have reshot most of the film, which was initially directed by Len Wiseman.
Based on a report by The Wrap, Lionsgate’s struggle at the box office this year is being examined, and it’s speculated that the reason given for the delay of “Ballerina” may not have been entirely truthful. Originally set to debut during the summer, the film has now been pushed back to June 2025. Initially, it was reported that Stahelski, director of the first four “John Wick” films, was only brought on board to film additional action scenes. However, according to a new report, citing sources familiar with the production, Stahelski actually reshot most of the movie because Wiseman’s initial cut failed to meet the standards of the franchise. The reshoots took place in Prague over a period of two to three months, and Wiseman was not present during any of them, according to the report.
Due to the extended duration of the filming, Stahelski needed to postpone the production of the revival of the ’80s fantasy series, ‘Highlander’. This upcoming project garnered enthusiastic anticipation from fans of Stahelski’s work on the John Wick series. However, he also has another responsibility within the Keanu Reeves-led franchise, as he’s been appointed to manage all the IP related to John Wick, including any possible sequels or spinoffs. Given the favorable response and expansion of the first four films, the studio is hesitant to take a risk with ‘Ballerina’, even if it means delaying some of Stahelski’s other projects by five months, as one source revealed.
The John Wick Franchise Has Action-Standards to Live up to
According to recent reports, Stahelski might have initially believed he was there to shoot extra scenes for the film, but his perspective changed upon viewing Wiseman’s initial edit as a whole. It’s plausible that Wiseman was chosen because of his experience in action films, having worked on projects like the Underworld franchise, Live Free or Die Hard, and the Total Recall remake. However, given the exceptional standards set by the John Wick franchise, it could be that the task at hand was beyond Wiseman’s capabilities, leading to Stahelski stepping back in to steer things right again. At this point, these assumptions are speculative as the studio and crew have yet to confirm or deny the report. The delay in production might suggest some truth to it, though.
Ian McShane, who plays Winston in the series, remarked that living up to the John Wick standard was the reason for the delay of Ballerina when asked about it shortly after the news broke. He explained, “It’s not reshoots, it’s new shoots. They’re filming for Ballerina, which is the spinoff featuring Ana de Armas in the John Wick franchise. Essentially, they want to safeguard the franchise, and since we filmed the movie Ballerina about a year ago, they’ve reviewed it, and Chad [Stahelski], the director of all the John Wick films, has stepped in to make improvements because they need to maintain its quality.
The movie titled “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” serves as a spin-off, occurring between “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4“. In this film, Ana de Armas plays Eve Macarro, a ballet dancer turned assassin, who embarks on a quest for vengeance after her father’s demise. Following the Ruska Roma traditions, she undergoes training to carry out her mission. Alongside de Armas, the movie features an impressive cast including Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves.
