With just three episodes of “Matlock” remaining on the 2025 TV lineup, including a two-part finale on April 17th as hinted by Jason Ritter, there’s plenty of ground to catch up for Paramount+ subscribers who might be lagging. This is a race that even the famed Kathy Bates could understand, given her account of the greatest hurdle in producing an episode of “Matlock”, a struggle that Aaron Sorkin might empathize with.
On an episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, the esteemed actress who stars in showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman’s groundbreaking reboot candidly admitted that ‘walk and talk’ scenes have become a bit of a personal challenge for me. In her own eloquent terms, Kathy Bates explained this predicament as follows:
“These rapid-fire dialogue scenes where I’m required to move while delivering lines can sometimes feel like a formidable foe, a dance I’m still learning to master.
1. They make my life a living nightmare, as I must quickly grasp their conversation while simultaneously moving at a brisk pace.
2. They’re a constant source of frustration because understanding their rapid-fire dialogues requires quick thinking and swift movement.
3. Dealing with them is like navigating through a labyrinth; it requires both quick wit and nimble feet to keep up with their fast-paced, complex dialogue.
It’s safe to say that the number of times Matlock’s titular character, the double agent, has been seen wandering the halls of Jacobson Moore to discuss cases isn’t something I’ve kept track of, but I have a strong feeling it would be quite surprising. With 15 out of 18 episodes from Season 1 under our belt, there’s certainly no shortage of legal maneuvering to sift through.
These offices appear spacious enough for frequent discussions, which is advantageous since Matlock’s second season renewal can delve deeper into the esteemed tradition of business-focused television dramas.

Fortunately, as Bates further explained, it seems that she’s not troubled by walking. To clarify, Matlock’s tenacious protagonist views her physical challenges differently:
As a passionate cinephile, let me share my personal experience: When David [Del Rio] and I embarked on our journey in the pilot episode, it wasn’t as straightforward as it seems. You see, I’ve managed to shed an impressive 100 pounds, which has been nothing short of wonderful. What followed was a lot of walking, and walking, and more walking. The part where I was putting one foot in front of the other? That was definitely the easy part!
Ms. Bates, who has Type 2 diabetes, found memories of her weight loss journey reminiscent of the demanding physicality of past roles that left her drained. If Kathy Bates, the Academy Award-winning actress from Misery, can handle the physical demands of a role, it could serve as validation for Ms. Bates’ weight loss efforts.
In her concluding thoughts on the mystery, Kathy Bates explained the challenges behind the “talk” in “walk and talk” – all while disclosing how her fellow actors like David Del Rio lend assistance to her.
Although my brain may be somewhat outdated, I find myself relying heavily on David. He’s an absolute pleasure to collaborate with, and his expertise gives me the confidence I need to tackle tasks effectively. If we encounter any issues, we simply pause, regroup, and then continue forward together.
It’s fascinating how this group of actors manages to navigate the intricate plot twists while dressed in sharp business attire, doesn’t it? After all, maintaining character and delivering performances is indeed a crucial aspect of an actor’s craft.
On Thursday night at 9 PM ET on CBS, we’ll find out who persists as the story unfolds towards Matlock’s highly anticipated Season 1 finale. Kathy Bates and her fellow cast members will be back then, continuing their journey through “The Johnson Case.
