Banks Releases New Album ‘Off With Her Head’ Enlisting Doechii, Sampha & Yseult

About three years after her last complete album, electro-pop artist Banks is back with a vengeance, unveiling her newest release titled “Off With Her Head.” This powerful twelve-track collection showcases more collaborations than any of her past albums, featuring the Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, French pop sensation Yseult, and R&B vocalist Sampha.

Kicking off is the first song titled “Guillotine,” which starts gently with synths gradually increasing, culminating in a storm of distorted electronic sounds. The song ends powerfully with the blunt line, “Silence yourself with tape on your mouth and your head on the chopping block.” Immediately following is the lead single, “I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend (ft. Doechii),” which is a dismantled house track that highlights Doechii’s diverse vocal tones in a softly spoken verse.

As you progress through the playlist, the songs become softer around the midway point, featuring heartfelt lyrics and muted production. The fifth track, “Move (feat. Yseult)”, showcases a stunning interplay of vocal harmonies between the two artists, with Yseult contributing a verse in French expressing her intense affection for her lover. Later on, “Best Friends” tells a moving and relatable tale of a fading friendship, set against a backdrop of slowed 808s, acoustic guitar, and strings. Following this, “Meddle in the Mold” brings back the more energetic sound, utilizing dramatic piano, strings, and hip-hop instrumentation to complement Banks’s dynamic vocals.

Track ten, “Make It Up” (featuring Sampha), brings listeners back to Banks’ unique electro-pop style with a catchy, fragmented vocal melody from Sampha and layers of harmonious synths. The album concludes with the final track, “Off With Her Head,” which is a powerful display of Banks’ exceptional vocal abilities. In this song, she exhibits emotional depth and seamless falsetto transitions, singing in the pre-chorus, “This is it. I’m just being honest, and I won’t change my mind. And there’s nothing you can do.” As the music softly fades out, Banks tenderly sings the closing lyric, “I apologize.
