A retrospective exhibition at the Barbican, taking place from February 6 to May 11, will pay tribute to the late Noah Davis, recognizing his significant impact as one of the most innovative figurative artists of recent times. Originating in Los Angeles, Davis produced a collection of work that delved into the intricacies of Black existence, seamlessly combining real-world depictions with surreal imagery.
As an ardent admirer, I find myself inspired to portray the world I see, capturing everyday moments – people leaping into pools, dancing, or appreciating art – with a unique blend of happiness and wistfulness. Drawing upon photography, my personal memories, films, art history, and my imagination, I strive to create enigmatic paintings that resonate deeply with the human spirit.
2012 saw the establishment by Davis of The Underground Museum in Arlington Heights, Los Angeles, with the aim of offering free admission to top-tier art. The upcoming exhibition at the Barbican will showcase more than 50 pieces encompassing painting, sculpture, curatorial projects, and community initiatives, honoring Davis’ legacy from 2007 until his unexpected death in 2015.
