Barbie’s Success Will Change the Movie Industry According to Jane Campion

Barbie's Success Will Change the Movie Industry According to Jane Campion

As a long-time advocate for gender equality in the film industry, I wholeheartedly agree with Jane Campion’s sentiments regarding Greta Gerwig’s success with Barbie. Campion’s insights into the barriers that female directors face and her optimism about the future are inspiring.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie isn’t just resonating with young girls worldwide; it’s also being celebrated as a significant stride for women in the film industry, according to esteemed director Jane Campion. This innovative and humorous Barbie (Margot Robbie) tale, written and directed by Gerwig, takes the iconic Mattel doll on an extraordinary journey from Barbieland to the real world. There, Barbie and Ken (Ryan Gosling) encounter the story’s central theme: Barbie’s fear of death. Moreover, the film stirred controversy among conservative viewers due to its alleged feminist undertones, while simultaneously making a substantial impact on 2023’s box office, raking in over $1 billion.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Jane Campion (known for The Power of the Dog, Bright Star, and The Piano) expressed her admiration for Greta Gerwig’s work on Barbie, stating it signifies a significant leap forward for female directors. Campion believes that Gerwig’s success in crafting an original story with Barbie will pave the way for more women to be given financial backing without being limited by the stereotypical narratives often associated with major franchises such as the MCU. She elaborated on this idea by saying:

As a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled to see Greta Gerwig tackling the Barbie story. It’s refreshing to have a film that veers away from Marvel superheroes and offers a comedic, imaginative, and downright hilarious perspective on a classic tale. For once, we’ve got a woman who’s taken the reins, making history with her creative vision. The fact that she’s tapping into billions of dollars shows that Hollywood is finally trusting women with substantial resources. It’s an exciting time for film and a testament to the power of female storytellers!

Jane Campion Says Hollywood Is Still Very Male-Dominated

For many years, it’s been well-known that Hollywood has been heavily influenced by men. The mere mention of Hollywood conjures up images of powerful white men in suits, discussing projects in boardrooms, while male directors receive large sums of money to create their visions. The #MeToo movement shed light on another issue plaguing the industry – a deep-rooted patriarchy and misogyny. According to Jane Campion, while progress towards gender equality in Hollywood has been significant, there is still much work to be done.

Although Jane Campion won two Oscars as a director, her films have gained more popularity among modern audiences than they did when first released. Movies such as “Portrait of a Lady” (1996) are experiencing a resurgence in the streaming and Letterboxd era, with viewers rediscovering Campion’s influential work. The director isn’t entirely clear why her earlier films are only now being reappraised, but she attributes it partly to the gender-based power structures in Hollywood during her early career. She stated:

“For some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, it seems the industry has traditionally been heavily male-dominated. However, I’m grateful to say that the ‘Berlin Wall’ of gender dominance has crumbled, opening up more opportunities for everyone.”

Regarding Greta Gerwig’s triumph with the film Barbie, the director is planning to create a movie based on a fresh intellectual property, remaking a cherished children’s book titled The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. Simultaneously, the billion-dollar success of Barbie has led Mattel and Warner Bros. to approve new films based on toys, Barbie spin-offs, and the possibility of a sequel.
