Barry McGee has presented a West Coast counterpart to his recent exhibition in New York titled ‘Cherry Picking,’ which is named ‘Cherry Pit.’ This expansive display is concealed within The Hole’s art storage. In this show, you will find numerous pieces by Barry McGee himself, items from his personal collection, and contributions from over 50 artists.
During Los Angeles’ Frieze Week, McGee has set up a zine fair at his gallery as well. McGee’s artworks, encompassing paintings, sketches, and mixed media sculptures, delve into the intricacies of city life, portraying themes of fleeting existence and marginalized societies. Inspired by graffiti at the age of 18, he garnered fame under the moniker Twist, adorning urban landscapes with images of homeless figures, liquor bottles, and industrial symbols. He rose to prominence as a significant figure in San Francisco’s Mission School, a collective of artists from the late 90s whose self-taught methods stood out amidst the influx of tech-driven gentrification in the region.
