As a lifelong DC comics enthusiast who’s been following these characters since the days of Batman: The Animated Series and the original Teen Titans cartoon, I must say, the announcement of a Bane and Deathstroke team-up movie has me absolutely thrilled!
DC Studios is heavily focusing on its roster of villains, with “Joker: Folie à Deux” hitting cinemas and “The Penguin” gracing our screens on HBO Max. The latest move in this strategy appears to be James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plan to team up Bane and Deathstroke in a film. Meanwhile, Gunn is busy shaping his new DC Universe, which boasts an impressive array of projects such as the animated series “Creature Commandos” premiering later this year. Additionally, both “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2 are scheduled for release in 2025, to be followed by “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in 2026 and a “Lanterns” series in the same year. It seems another project featuring two renowned DC villains is now in the pipeline for development.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios and Warner Bros. are planning a movie that centers around the villains Bane and Deathstroke. While these characters are predominantly linked to Batman, Deathstroke also has ties to Green Arrow and the Teen Titans. Matthew Orton, who penned the script for Marvel Studio’s upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” is involved in writing the script. The film is being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios, but its place within their overall strategy remains uncertain.
Bane and Deathstroke History at the Movies
I’m a fan who appreciates the rich universe of DC Comics, and two characters that truly stand out as iconic villains are Bane and Deathstroke. Bane first appeared in 1993, brought to life by writer Chuck Dixon and artist Graham Nolan. His most memorable moment, perhaps, is when he broke Batman’s back in the unforgettable “Knightfall” storyline, which served as inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, The Dark Knight Rises, where Tom Hardy delivered a performance that has since become synonymous with the character.
In the 2010s, around when DC introduced their New 52, Deathstroke began being portrayed as a nemesis of Batman. This was evident in the game “Batman: Arkham Origins” and later with the casting of Joe Manganiello for the character in Ben Affleck’s planned standalone Batman movie, hinted at in “Justice League”. Manganiello had also wanted to star in a solo Deathstroke origin film directed by Garreth Evans, but that project was cancelled. Some aspects of this aborted movie might be used in the upcoming Bane/Deathstroke film, though it’s undecided whether Manganiello will reprise his role or if another actor will take it over.
Combining Deathstroke and Bane in a standalone film could align with James Gunn’s vision for The Brave and the Bold, focusing on Batman mentoring his son, Damian Wayne, to become Robin. In the comics, both Deathstroke and Bane have associations with the League of Assassins, as Damian’s mother is Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul, the organization’s leader. The DC Universe is also developing a Teen Titans film where Deathstroke might make an appearance. James Gunn has hinted at future plans for Deathstroke in the DCU. Although it’s possible that the project could be an “Elseworlds” movie, it appears more probable that Bane and Deathstroke will encounter the uncast Batman sometime down the line. Regardless of where this film fits into the overall scheme, DC Studios aims for a villain-centric movie reminiscent of The Joker, rather than Morbius.
