Batman's 85th Anniversary Brings Three Classic Dark Knight Movies Back to AMC Theaters

As a film enthusiast with over four decades of witnessing the evolution of Batman on the silver screen, I can confidently say that this year’s Batman Day lineup is nothing short of extraordinary! Growing up with Michael Keaton’s dark and brooding portrayal in 1989, it’s fascinating to see how Warner Bros. has managed to keep the momentum going, reimagining and reinventing the Caped Crusader for a new generation.

On September 21st, 2024, mark your calendars for Batman Day! To honor this occasion, AMC Theaters is giving fans a unique opportunity to watch one out of three Batman movies in cinemas. Batman Day is an annual celebration initiated by DC Comics to commemorate the inception of Batman. Traditionally, comic book stores participate with special Batman-themed promotions, but over the years, it has expanded to various promotional platforms. Initially celebrated in July back in 2014, since then, it’s been held on the third or fourth Saturday of September every year.

Starting from September 20, 2024, AMC Theaters will be hosting exclusive screenings of three Batman movies – “Batman” (1989), “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” (1993), and “Batman Forever” (1995). These iconic films will be back in theaters for a brief period. Keep an eye out, as tickets might go on sale at different times, with some screenings possibly happening across the entire weekend. Fans can sign up to receive notifications about when they can purchase their tickets.

It appears Warner Bros. has some exciting events lined up for Batman Day this year. Starting September 19th, “The Penguin” series, a spin-off and continuation of “The Batman”, is set to premiere on Max, with Colin Ferrell returning as Oz Cobblepott/The Penguin. This series will pave the way for “The Batman Part II”. Additionally, “Joker: Folie à Deux”, the sequel to 2019’s “Joker” and starring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is scheduled for release just two weeks later.

The selection of Batman movies is also interesting. 1989’s Batman by director Tim Burton was the most successful Batman movie until The Dark Knight was released. Its inclusion is likely a bit of cross-promotion as the studio also has Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which will reteam director Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, so audiences can do a double feature of Burton/Keaton if they want. Meanwhile, Batman Forever was the film that relaunched the Batman franchise after the backlash to Batman Returns. While Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was a box office disappointment, it is now considered one of the best Batman adaptations ever, and its connection to the legendary Batman: The Animated Series has made it a fan-favorite.

1) AMC has been enjoying a streak of successes by bringing back Batman films to cinemas. Last year, for Batman Day, the three movies from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy were re-screened in theaters. More recently, they hosted special showings of this year’s The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, which included a preview of The Penguin. Furthermore, AMC offers a limited edition popcorn bucket shaped like the Bat-signal, which has quickly become popular online. Now, fans of Batman can revisit classic films on the big screen or catch their first theater experience of a favorite Batman movie.
