Battlestar Galactica Fans Finally Get an Update on Long-Delayed Reboot

As a lifelong fan of Battlestar Galactica, I must admit that the recent news about the revival has left me feeling as if I’ve been hit by a Cylon raider. After decades of waiting for a worthy follow-up to Ronald D. Moore’s masterpiece, it seems we may be back to square one once again.

As a lifelong fan of science fiction and the Battlestar Galactica franchise, I was excited to hear that NBCUniversal was planning to revive the series with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail at the helm. However, after reading about the latest news regarding the project, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed.

As a passionate gamer eagerly anticipating the revival of Battlestar Galactica, it’s disheartening to hear that the project seems to have encountered an insurmountable obstacle, or perhaps a cosmic anomaly. According to Deadline, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, Peacock, has chosen not to proceed with the series. It appears that despite the green light being never officially granted and the project being in development since 2019, under the guidance of Derek Simonds as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, it seems the universe is not yet ready for our return to Battlestar Galactica. The production company, Universal Cable Productions (UCP), will now shop the series around to other networks and streaming platforms in search of a new home.

In 2019, Sam Esmail was enlisted to revive the television series “Battlestar Galactica” for the streaming platform Peacock. This move aimed to increase the value of Peacock as a streaming service by introducing an original series based on one of Universal’s most successful intellectual properties. At that time, Universal wanted to expand their various franchises through Peacock’s original content, aiming to make Peacock competitive with streaming giants like Disney+, HBO Max, and Netflix. Alongside “Battlestar Galactica,” Peacock also planned original series based on popular franchises such as “Pitch Perfect” and “Ted.” Even a potential adaptation of the box office flop “Waterworld” was under consideration for a streaming series.

Despite five years passing since the announcement of the Battlestar Galactica revival, streaming platform Peacock has found it challenging to compete with major platforms, leading to cuts across various areas. Given the immense popularity of the 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica and Sam Esmail’s series being set in the same continuity, a new series seemed like an obvious choice. However, the current world is significantly different from the one that Ronald D. Moore’s reimagining entered, and his version was very much a product of its time – including airing on prestige cable television for the Syfy Network.

There’s still a possibility that the Battlestar Galactica revival may reappear on the Syfy network, similar to its original run, or it could be picked up by a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Despite AppleTV+’s reported budget cuts, a well-known series like Battlestar Galactica could potentially attract more viewers to their platform. This news might be concerning for the show, but let’s hope that Battlestar Galactica can find a way back eventually. So say we all!
