BBC Takes Thomas Vinterberg’s Climate Change Drama Series ‘Families Like Ours’ for U.K.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got some exciting news as a fan! The esteemed BBC has picked up “Families Like Ours,” the first TV drama series from the brilliant Oscar-winning director, Thomas Vinterberg, who’s best known for his work on “Another Round.” Can’t wait to see it!

A television show that debuted at the Venice Film Festival recently presents a hypothetical scenario set in the not-so-distant future, where increased sea levels lead Denmark to evacuate all six million of its citizens, making them refugees seeking refuge in other countries. This 7-part series chronicles the journeys and struggles of various families as they search for a new home outside their homeland.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vinterberg shared that his goal was to steer clear of typical disaster movie tropes, instead concentrating on the profound human story behind climate change and mass migration. He described this as a “gradual dystopia.

Vinterberg found inspiration for writing the series following the influx of Syrian refugees into Europe during their civil war, pondering what might occur if the roles were reversed and they themselves had to bid farewell to all they cherished.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite TV channel, BBC Four and BBC iPlayer, has acquired the series “Families Like Ours” from Studiocanal. They’re taking care of international sales for this project. Sue Deeks, the Chief of BBC Programme Acquisition, described it as a skillfully crafted, thought-provoking drama that delves into the challenges people face when they’re forced to deal with the unthinkable and make decisions that seem impossible.

Vinterberg and Bo Hr. Hansen (from the Department Q: Journal 64) collaborated on creating this series that boasts a talented cast consisting of Amaryllis August, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Thomas Bo Larsen, David Dencik, and Paprika Steen. This production was filmed on various sites across Denmark, Sweden, France, Romania, and the Czech Republic, and was jointly produced by Zentropa Entertainments for TV 2 Denmark, Studiocanal, and Canal+.
