- Beam On: A Star Forest adventure is an endless flyer made to promote a band
- In this Flappy Bird-like you tap to rise and fall, while using a limited-use jetpack for more precise flight
- Out now on the iOS App Store, it’s aimed at kids, but does a good job of showcasing the genre
Occasionally, you might encounter a release that initially appears ordinary. However, upon further investigation, something intriguing surfaces to make it unique. This happened with Beam On, which at first glance seems like an average endless runner (flyer), but upon closer inspection, it’s actually a promotional tool for the band Star Forest!
If you haven’t encountered Star Forest yet, let me fill you in. It’s essentially a digital musical group, similar to Gorillaz and Hatsune Miku but leaning more towards the former, as it doesn’t involve creating music virtually. The track “Beam on” is actually tied to Star Forest’s most recent music video!
Regarding the gameplay, think of it as a blend between Flappy Bird and Jetpack Joyride. The objective is to dodge obstacles using the standard tap-to-rise controls. However, an occasional jetpack will be available for more intricate maneuvering. As for the design, while it may not be groundbreaking, it doesn’t need to be, as the appealing retro aesthetics and tunes effectively set the tone for the band.
Star vs- wait, wrong franchise
Star Forest, with its adorable graphics and mellow melodies, seems tailored for children. However, I suspect there might be an underestimated group of adult players drawn to a Flappy Bird-like game that doesn’t require constant in-app purchases. Those who appreciate the simplicity of Beam On may find it worth a second glance.
Is it a world-beater? Not sure, but it’s certainly an interesting way to promote a virtual band.
