Jimmy Donaldson, famously known as Mr. Beast, has experienced unprecedented online popularity. His YouTube channel boasts over 330 million subscribers, due to his videos featuring competitions, giveaways, and charitable acts, which serve as the main content driving the channel’s growth. As a result of this success, Mr. Beast has ventured into other business areas, such as a restaurant chain and food products.
In his latest venture, Mr. Beast collaborates with Amazon Prime Video to air the competition show “Beast Games” on their streaming service. However, despite its high-profile backing and an over-the-top game show style, the series has faced a disappointing response and stirred up controversy. So, why is that? Let’s explore the reasons behind it.
‘Beast Games’ Format
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but get excited about the groundbreaking competition show, Beast Games. This show promises to be the craziest you’ve ever seen, as it gathered 1,000 contestants to battle it out over 10 episodes for a jaw-dropping $5 million prize. The mix of events and challenges requires both physical and mental agility, with each contestant striving to avoid elimination. What sets this reality competition apart is the innovative setup: Beast City, a custom-built neighborhood, serves as home base for the contestants and various arenas for the numerous challenges. Among the competitions are the straightforward “Red Ball Patience Challenge” and the intriguing “Block Stacking Challenge.
It’s estimated that the production cost of Beast Games exceeds $100 million, making it Mr. Beast’s most expensive project to date. However, this figure represents just about half of what he typically invests in his yearly show. The series is set to shatter 12 Guinness World Records, including the largest cash prize, the highest number of contestants, the greatest number of cameras used, the longest length of cable used for a show, and many more impressive feats.
People Found ‘Beast Games’ Boring and Cruel
In essence, Beast Games would essentially magnify the scale of typical Mr. Beast show challenges, while also taking cues from Squid Games, a popular Korean drama series. Yet, unfortunately, Beast Games fell short in comparison to the YouTube-based challenges that it sought to emulate.
As a movie enthusiast, watching Beast Games felt like being tasked with orchestrating a chaotic birthday party where children were made to endure a tedious string of dull, redundant challenges. The lack of originality and the heavy use of emotional manipulation and sabotage raised some serious ethical concerns for me. As someone who entertains kids on YouTube, I found the excessive materialism, cruelty, and mundane tasks to be an unappetizing cocktail that left most viewers feeling unsatisfied.
The program additionally featured contestants expressing concerns about their on-set experiences, as hidden scandals cast a harsh light on an otherwise monotonous structure, making it appear unjust in its application. Contestants alleged that they were subjected to hazardous working conditions, suffered injuries due to lack of foresight, and were denied access to their own medication. An anonymous team member spoke to Rolling Stone, labeling the entire production as “chaotic” and “wild.
Various Controversies Following ‘Mr. Beast’
Mr. Beast primarily caters to younger audiences, such as teenagers, which is significant when comparing his YouTube success to the criticism he encounters online. It’s worth noting that a typical tween isn’t browsing the web for professional critiques or logging into platforms like IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes to rate Beast Games; instead, they are at an age where they consume content without questioning it. However, given Mr. Beast’s history of controversial incidents, some questioning is indeed necessary.
On July 4, 2024, a former employee named Dawson released a video titled “I Used to Work for MrBeast, He’s Not What He Seems.” In this video, he claimed that MrBeast conducted fake giveaways, manipulated videos, ran illegal lotteries, and sold forged signatures. This allegation sparked increased scrutiny of his activities within the YouTube community, with legal experts, drama channels, and other YouTubers weighing in. For instance, Rosanna Pansino, in an episode of Just Trish Podcast, spoke about how MrBeast had altered a competition she participated in to change the winner’s result.
Troubles With Food Products
Mr. Beast’s diverse business endeavors have drawn criticism as well. Last October, news broke that his latest venture, Feastibles, encountered issues with mold growth in some of the pre-packed lunches (as reported by The Independent). Additionally, Feastibles, a product associated with Prime drink from Logan Paul and KSI, has faced criticism due to its high sugar and caffeine content, which many view as potentially damaging to the market it targets (according to CBC). Furthermore, Mr. Beast’s burger chains experienced scrutiny early on, including a lawsuit focused on poor food quality (as reported by NBC).
Questionable Online Conduct by Employees
Unfortunately for me, a situation that initially seemed straightforward – Ava Kris Tyson identifying as trans – turned into something more complicated as people started scrutinizing Ava’s online activities. This scrutiny led to allegations that Ava may have inappropriately interacted with underage individuals online. Faced with these claims, Ava decided to step away from the YouTube channel. However, online investigators didn’t stop there and continued to delve deeper.
A video by SomeOrdinaryGamers titled “MrBeast Has Some Terrible Friends…” brought attention to questionable content that Tyson allegedly shared in group chats where minors were present. Tyson’s friendship with the artist Shadman, who creates controversial work depicting minors in explicit situations, has raised even more questions about their conduct.
Although I was not directly involved, concerns have been raised about my knowledge of my staff’s actions and whether I covered for Ava in this matter.
In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, the chatter and accusations surrounding Mr. Beast and his ventures are abundant and diverse, coming from multiple sources. This has led many individuals and online commentators to express their dislike towards him. Despite Beast Games not being universally appreciated, I believe its negative reception would have been inevitable given the public’s interaction and opinions in digital forums.
