Bed of Chaos: Elden Ring Redemption?

As the release of Elden Ring Nightreign approaches, fans of FromSoftware are eagerly anticipating what’s in store. This upcoming game not only offers a substantial dose of Elden Ring content but also promises a cooperative multiplayer experience that surpasses the co-op features found in past FromSoftware games.

The multiplayer mode, character types, and the return of elements from the Dark Souls series are what’s generating the most conversation about Elden Ring Nightreign. Although Nightreign and Dark Souls aren’t linked directly, it has been confirmed that several bosses from the Dark Souls games will appear in Nightreign, including Duke’s Dear Freja from Dark Souls 2 and The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3. The reveal trailer for Nightreign also hints at an NPC who seems similar to DS3’s Fire Keeper, but this connection is not definitive. Some have criticized the inclusion of older Dark Souls content, but it’s undeniable that it will bring some gameplay advantages, particularly as previously disliked bosses are given another opportunity to shine.

Dark Souls’ Bed of Chaos Can Redeem Itself in Elden Ring Nightreign

Bed of Chaos Is Regularly Cited As the Worst FromSoftware Boss

Among FromSoftware enthusiasts, there may be differences in opinions, but they generally share a firm viewpoint on one topic: Bed of Chaos is considered among, if not the most poorly designed boss ever produced by the developer. It shares similarities with Dragon God as an unconventional battle that fails to leverage combat mechanics effectively, instead forcing players to navigate a quasi-puzzle-platforming challenge to prevail. However, while Dragon God disrupts gameplay and doesn’t significantly recognize player skills, it is relatively simple and straightforward: its primary flaw lies in being dull.

The Bed of Chaos battle can be tedious yet extremely aggravating. To defeat this boss, players need to destroy two orbs and a bug-like creature nestled at the root base of an expansive network of tentacle-like growths. Finding these critical attack spots is a grueling experience, as the ground beneath the player seems to collapse unexpectedly, potentially causing falls into newly formed holes. Additionally, Bed of Chaos tries to push the player into these pits. To make matters worse, the ground periodically explodes with pillars of fire that are challenging and sometimes impossible to dodge. Essentially, this battle is disliked due to its excessive difficulty, often resulting in death even when the player is playing correctly.

The battle at the Bed of Chaos unfolds within the maligned realm of Lost Izalith, a location that hardly enhances its already grim reputation in the Dark Souls franchise.

How Elden Ring Nightreign Could Redeem Bed of Chaos

As a dedicated FromSoftware fan, even I’ve had my fair share of frustrations with the Bed of Chaos boss fight in Dark Souls. But imagine if this infamous foe made a comeback in Elden Ring Nightreign! The chaos could be tamed and even transformed into fun with a team of players.

For instance, one player could serve as lookout, warning the group when the monster is about to unleash a devastating attack. Or perhaps there’d be a mechanism to rescue a fallen comrade from the abyss during battle, or to carry on without them, creating a thrilling risk-reward scenario.

Instead of just relying on brute force and trial and error, as is currently the case when tackling the Bed of Chaos in Dark Souls 1, there could be additional strategies available if FromSoftware were to modify the battle for cooperative play. If executed properly, the Bed of Chaos could transform into a stage that enhances rather than detracts from FromSoftware’s reputation with Nightreign.
