Beetlejuice Return Found Winona Ryder Struggling to Envision Her Character

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for Tim Burton’s quirky masterpieces and a deep appreciation for the evolution of characters over time, I can confidently say that the return of Lydia Deetz in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is not just exciting, but also intriguing.

In the original version, it says that Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice grew up differently than Winona Ryder had anticipated. The actress who originally played Lydia in Tim Burton’s 1988 classic is back as Lydia for the much-awaited sequel titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It’s been 36 years since audiences were first introduced to Lydia, the sensitive goth girl at the heart of Tim Burton’s legendary film, and they will have certain expectations of how Lydia should be as an adult. As for Ryder, she admits that imagining Lydia as a grown-up was challenging. In an interview with Slash Film, Ryder explained:

“It had never crossed my mind that Lydia would have kids or be involved in a romantic relationship. As she grew older, I envisioned her more as a solitary figure, contentedly spending her time in seclusion, perhaps in her own little world, yet unattached and alone.”

It appears that Ryder’s conception of Lydia aligns with her character, but there are some differences: Lydia isn’t actually living in the attic alone; instead, she’s a mother to a teenage daughter and the presenter of a TV show called “Ghost House with Lydia Deetz.” Ryder found that his vision for this version of Lydia started to crystalize once Jenna Ortega (who plays her daughter Astrid) and Justin Theroux (who portrays Lydia’s boyfriend Rory) were brought on board.

“After reaching that place, Jenna and I formed a connection, and Justin joined us. It made me reflect on past relationships and wonder, ‘What was I doing back then?’ However, I doubt teenage Lydia could have foreseen herself being in the spotlight like this.”

The original cast of Beetlejuice, including Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara, reunite under director Tim Burton for this sequel. Joining them are newcomers such as Jenna Ortega, Jared Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Arthur Conti, and Filipe Cates.

What Can We Expect of Jenna Ortega’s Astrid?

In the forthcoming continuation, we find the Deetz clan grappling with the loss of Charles Deetz. They gather at their Winter Haven residence, which becomes the stage for unexpected events when Lydia’s adolescent daughter, Astrid, inadvertently reactivates a gateway to the Afterlife. This action brings Beetlejuice back into our world once more.

It’s quite likely that numerous fans are anticipating Astrid to resemble her mother from the first film in terms of character. However, as stated by Ortega, this isn’t accurate. In an interview with PEOPLE in June, the actress portraying Wednesday explained that Astrid is similar but in a different manner than one might expect, not following the usual assumptions. This doesn’t imply she will be bright and cheerful.

Ortega also opened up about Lydia’s return, telling the publication:

…”It’s quite unusual because there’s a lot of filling in gaps about Lydia’s recent life events, which I believe is delightful for anyone who admires the character and looks forward to her return.”

Starting August 28, 2024, the film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will kick off the 81st Venice International Film Festival. Following its debut at the festival, the movie will hit cinemas on September 6th. With high anticipation and expectations, this film is projected to create a significant wave at the box office, potentially surpassing the record set by 2017’s “It” ($123 million) as one of the most successful September releases ever.
