As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a knack for binge-watching, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing that Bel-Air is coming back for one last hurrah. Growing up, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was more than just a TV show to me; it was an escape, a window into a world far removed from my own. And now, seeing this modern take on the classic sitcom unfold as a dramatic series has been an exciting journey.
Peacock will return to Bel-Air for one last time.
Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal, has opted to continue the series “Bel-Air” – a modernized dramatic adaptation of Will Smith’s 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” on NBC – for its fourth and concluding season. This decision was made approximately three months after the conclusion of season three.
The show, featuring Smith as one of its executive producers, originated from a YouTube video by Morgan Cooper that reinterpreted the sitcom as a dramatic series with a gritty edge. Peacock seized upon this concept and ordered two seasons for the project in September 2020; Bel-Air made its debut on screens in February 2022.
Season three showed Will (Jabari Banks) and Carlton (Olly Sholotan) growing closer together, as Carlton aimed to leave his past addictions behind and restore his tarnished reputation. However, this new bond also brought to light significant disparities in their personal histories and perspectives on life.
Carla Banks Waddles, showrunner, expressed to The Hollywood Reporter during season three that one of the most satisfying aspects has been observing individuals accompany us on our journey, initially holding skepticism and uncertainty. This transitioned into watching them grow fond of Carlton, who they initially disliked due to changes in his character, asking themselves ‘What have they done with Carlton?’. However, as the story unfolded, Carlton evolved into a beloved character, prompting viewers to empathize, understand him, and cheer for his success. The bond between Carlton and Will, and witnessing Will in a new environment, struggling as an outsider in a more dramatic setting, has been an enjoyable part of the journey.
Apart from Banks and Sholotan, the cast of Bel-Air also features Adrian Holmes, Cassandra Freeman, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbola, Jordan L. Jones, and Simone Joy Jones.
The series is jointly produced by Universal Television and Westbrook Studios. Executive production duties are handled by Waddles, along with Cooper, Smith, Terence Carter, James Lassiter, Miguel Melendez, Benny Medina, Quincy Jones, and the Borowitz duo (Andy and Susan).
