Bell Media Sells Minority Stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment for More Than $3B

As a long-time sports enthusiast and Canadian resident, I must admit this news has piqued my interest! The deal between BCE Inc. and Rogers Communications is nothing short of a game-changer for the Canadian sports landscape.

Canadian telecom titan BCE Inc. has agreed on a transaction with competitor Rogers Communications, marking the sale of their 37.5% share in Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment for approximately CAD$4.7 billion (or USD$3.46 billion).

The agreement increases Rogers’s controlling share in MLSE (the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors professional sports teams) to 75%. Pending approval from sports leagues and regulators, the transaction is anticipated to be finalized around mid-2025.

In the BCE context, the funds from the recent transaction have been allocated towards reducing debt obligations. Additionally, they’ve obtained exclusive broadcasting rights for Maple Leafs and Raptors games on their TSN sports network for the upcoming two decades, through their Bell Media subsidiary.

The extended partnership with Rogers is intended to strengthen TSN’s position as a leading Canadian television sports channel. In the past, live sports on TV were crucial for keeping the Canadian cable package together, but in recent times, this bond has become less secure due to cord-cutting and the increasing encroachment of U.S.-based streaming giants who have been acquiring expensive professional sports television rights from Sportsnet, a channel owned by Rogers, as well as TSN.

On Mondays, Prime Video in Canada has now secured exclusive rights to broadcast National Hockey League matches. This move marks an extension of the sports competition between entertainment industries, with the contest now spanning the boundary between the United States and Canada.

As a passionate gamer and avid hockey fan, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve sealed a two-year partnership with the NHL and Rogers Communications! This deal was made possible, and I couldn’t be more excited about streaming some top-notch NHL action for my Canadian viewers.
