Though I may not have known him by name prior, the actor Simon Fisher-Becker was a significant figure in two of the most iconic sci-fi and fantasy series ever made. Regrettably, I learned that he passed away at the age of 63 on Sunday, as shared by his agent. Fisher-Becker gained widespread recognition for portraying Dorium Maldovar, the blue-skinned Crespallion dealer with a knack for the black market, who frequently appeared during Matt Smith’s tenure as Doctor Who, and The Fat Friar in the 2001 film.
Through a statement to MailOnline, Jeffrey Management representative Kim Barry acknowledged the passing of the actor and expressed heartfelt tribute, referring not just to him as a client, but also as a cherished personal friend. Here’s the complete statement:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the loss of our dear friend and esteemed client. He was not only an exceptional talent, but also a wonderful person who touched many lives.
Today I’ve not just lost a client named Simon Fisher-Becker, but a dear friend of 15 years whom I’ve known. A conversation that will forever be etched in my memory is the one we had when he got the role of Dorium Moldovar in BBC’s Dr Who. Beyond being a client, Simon was a writer, an engaging storyteller, and an exceptional public speaker. He always went out of his way to help me, and his kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in people were truly remarkable. My heartfelt sympathies are with his husband Tony, his brother, nieces, nephews, and the countless fans who admired him.
I, as Carrie Fisher’s husband, Tony Dugdale, took to her official Facebook page to express my personal tribute. I mentioned that the page would stay active in the near term. In my own words, I penned down:
“I will continue to manage this space, keeping it open for all who wish to share their love and memories of Carrie.
Greetings all, I’m Tony, Simon’s devoted partner. I have deeply regrettable news to share. At 2:50 this afternoon, we lost our beloved Simon. For a while, I will maintain his account active. However, at present, I’m unsure if I’ll continue posting here. Thank you for your understanding and support during these trying times.
A Much-Loved Actor With a Small But Brilliant Legacy
Simon Fisher-Becker wasn’t a seasoned actor with a long list of credits, but throughout his three-decade acting journey across both TV and stage, he consistently landed roles. He was featured in multiple British television series like The Bill, Doctors, One Foot In the Grave, and Getting On. Additionally, he played a minor part in the 2012 film adaptation of Hugh Jackman’s Les Misérables.
In the Harry Potter films, his character as The Fat Friar didn’t receive the same level of attention as in the books, which meant he wasn’t featured in any of the sequels. However, his portrayal of Dorium in Doctor Who left a lasting impression, becoming a recurring figure whose significant finale was as a disembodied head, forewarning The Doctor that his attempts to dodge a prophesied demise would lead to severe repercussions.
Despite primarily acting in British television shows, there’s been an outpouring of tributes online as people, both fans and colleagues, express their emotions during this sorrowful period, reflecting on his impact.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by this news. Simon Fisher-Becker was simply extraordinary in every role he played. We’ve lost a beacon of light, a unique talent that graced our screens. Another fellow fan echoed my sentiments, expressing their sadness upon hearing about the demise of Simon Fisher-Becker, better known as Dorium Maldovar from #DoctorWho. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, dear artist. #RIP
