Ben Affleck Quits Batman After Disastrous DCEU Experience!

Ben Affleck, an Academy Award winner, has been open about both his successes and setbacks throughout his extensive career. While he’s had victories, there have also been missteps, and some might categorize his tenure in the DC Universe as one of those missteps. Despite being well-liked as Bruce Wayne/Batman by fans, the movies and subsequent issues linked to their releases have tarnished Affleck’s work in those films. Now that he has stepped away from the DCEU, Affleck is confirming his time as a superhero has come to an end.

In a fresh feature with GQ Magazine, Affleck reflected on his stint with the DCEU and delved into the reasons behind the difficulties he encountered during his role as Batman. Previously labeling playing The Dark Knight as his “most unpleasant experience,” the actor provided more insight into why his time as Batman was so challenging.

While there were several factors that made that experience extremely challenging, it wasn’t solely due to the generic aspects like being in a superhero film. Frankly, I’m no longer drawn towards such genres, not because of that difficult encounter, but rather, my initial fascination has waned. To be clear, I wouldn’t wish to revisit a situation similar to that one. It was a clash of goals, perceptions, and expectations. Furthermore, I must admit, I wasn’t contributing much of value at the time either. There were flaws on my part, substantial ones, during that project.

Ben Affleck’s Time as Batman Was Tumultuous

In 2016, Ben Affleck made his debut as Batman in the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Despite earning a substantial sum worldwide ($873.6 million), some critics and audiences felt it didn’t meet expectations, and it received negative reviews with a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Affleck’s portrayal of Batman was generally well-received by fans. It’s important to note that the film’s poor reviews were more about the movie itself rather than Affleck’s performance.

Affleck has openly discussed his struggles during this period, particularly with alcohol. Although he’s now managing his issues effectively, he acknowledges that they may have impacted his work at that time.

You can evaluate my acting abilities by watching different movies I’ve been in. However, some of the negative experiences I had were due to the fact that I often brought a lot of sadness with me to set every day. This wasn’t conducive to creating a positive atmosphere, even though I didn’t intentionally cause problems. I simply came, did my job, and left. To excel in this field, one needs to contribute more than just that.

Ben Affleck would take on his character again in both “Justice League” and “The Flash,” but these films faced challenges beyond the actor’s control. The production of “Justice League” underwent a change in directors when Zack Snyder had to step down due to personal issues, leading to Joss Whedon taking over. Subsequent events surrounding “Justice League” have become film folklore, as Whedon made significant changes to Snyder’s original work and was reportedly harsh towards cast members on set, a behavior that was also documented in other productions. Despite the underperformance of “Justice League,” some issues were addressed with the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” which garnered positive reviews from both fans and critics.

The Flash movie initially had a brief role for Affleck’s character, yet it faced numerous challenges, primarily due to the complexities surrounding star Ezra Miller and other factors. These complications included director changes, COVID-19 delays, but it was Miller’s legal troubles and various scandals that predominantly overshadowed the film, despite many of these issues seemingly being resolved before its release. Additionally, speculation about an upcoming overhaul of the DCEU after James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed co-CEOs may have contributed to the film’s muted reception. Some spectators felt that the movie was less significant due to the impending restructuring of the DCEU, which in turn could have led to its lackluster box office performance. Ultimately, the film garnered mixed reviews from critics and earned a total of $271 million globally against a reported budget that could reach up to $220 million.
