Ben Affleck Takes Over Matt Damon’s Role in Netflix’s ‘Animals’ with Gillian Anderson!

Ben Affleck is gearing up to take on dual roles – directing and acting – in his upcoming film project, which is scheduled to start production soon. As per an exclusive report from Deadline, the Netflix thriller titled “Animals” is set to be filmed in Los Angeles once the rest of the cast is finalized. Originally, Affleck had planned for his long-time collaborator Matt Damon to star in the film, but due to frequent schedule changes, Damon is no longer a suitable choice. Instead, Affleck has decided to step into the role that was intended for Damon – effectively replacing him with himself.

Besides Ben Affleck playing a lead role in the film “Animals” while also directing, Deadline has announced that Gillian Anderson will also be part of this project, though her specific role is yet to be revealed. The movie “Animals” is adapted from a script written by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray, who has previously worked on scripts like “Captain Phillips,” “The Hunger Games,” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.” At the moment, the details of the plot are being kept secret.

It appears that Affleck is eager to take on the main character in the upcoming movie to expedite pre-production progress. Earlier, due to complications with rights matters, he was satisfied just directing the project. The actor who played Batman isn’t new to multitasking in film productions, as he has both directed and starred in movies like “The Town,” “Argo,” “Live By Night,” and most recently, “Air.” Out of these four films, only “Live By Night” received unfavorable reviews from critics, but Affleck’s directing skills were still commendable.

Ben Affleck and Netflix Have Plenty of Projects to Look Forward to Together

Artists Equity, a combined production company and creative studio, is in charge of making the movie titled “Animals“. It’s not just this film that they’re working on; another project destined for Netflix distribution is also underway. As for “Animals“, no release date has been set yet. On the other hand, the Netflix Original film “RIP” (also produced by Artists Equity) will arrive on the streaming service in Fall 2025. In this movie, directed by Joe Carnahan, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reprise their roles as police partners who discover a large cache of drug money, causing internal strife and trust issues within their team.

It seems Matt Damon won’t be in “Animals” because he’s already committed to playing a role in Christopher Nolan’s version of “The Odyssey,” which is set to start shooting this year and should hit theaters in 2026. Since both “Animals” and the expected release date for it are also 2026, it’s not surprising that Damon had to decline participation in “Animals.

A positive aspect of Damon leaving the show “Animals” is the opportunity to witness Affleck in a leading role for a project he’s directing. Known for his exceptional filmmaking skills, and with Gillian Anderson joining the cast, it’s challenging to envision the upcoming Netflix thriller as anything other than a high-quality production. Apart from “Animals” and “RIP”, Affleck also has “The Accountant 2” set to premiere later this year.
