As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the upcoming film “Belly of the Beast” is shaping up to be quite the intriguing and thought-provoking piece. The casting of Ben Stiller as Norman Mailer and Colin Farrell as Jack Henry Abbott is nothing short of inspired.
In the upcoming movie titled “Belly of the Beast,” directed by Andrew Haigh, Ben Stiller will take on the role of literary legend Norman Mailer, while Colin Farrell will portray Jack Henry Abbott. This film is based on Jerome Loving’s book, “Jack and Norman,” which delves into the complex relationship between these two individuals. Deadline reports that the production company behind this project is Village Roadshow Pictures (VRP). In addition to Haigh, Alexis Jolly also contributed to the screenplay for this intriguing tale.
Lately, Haigh has been in charge of the highly praised movie titled “All of Us Strangers“, a somewhat supernatural story that blends themes of love and healing from past wounds. This film features Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, and Claire Foy in its cast, with Haigh adapting the script from a novel by Taichi Yamada. “All of Us Strangers” had its premiere at the 50th edition of Telluride Film Festival and garnered numerous BAFTA nominations, including recognition for Haigh’s direction and screenplay, as well as acting performances from Mescal and Foy, along with the title of outstanding film of the year.
In the late ’70s, Norman Mailer strikes a friendship with criminal Abbott while he’s imprisoned for bank robbery, forgery, and murder. Mailer aids Abbott in penning his memoir and even advocates for his early release from prison, as reported by Deadline.
In the movie, with Mailer’s guidance, Abbott is released from prison following almost a decade behind bars and swiftly becomes admired by literary heavyweights. However, he grapples with adjusting to life outside. When Mailer, feeling creatively stifled and resentful of Jack’s meteoric rise, distances himself from his once-promising protégé, Jack plunges—committing a grave act of aggression in a New York City diner just six weeks after his freedom.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge Ernest Hemingway’s acclaim for his captivating novels like “The Naked and the Dead” yet, it’s undeniable that he stirs contentious debates within the literary sphere. Allegations of homophobia and misogyny have been leveled against him. Regrettably, his personal life is also marred by tragic events; he nearly took his second wife’s life through stabbing, and his fourth spouse accused him of physical abuse.
Belly of the Beast Will Be a Global Event

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I, along with Linda Cardellini, Tim Heidecker, and Edi Patterson from “The Righteous Gemstones,” will be starring in David Gordon Green’s upcoming film titled “Nutcrackers.” Meanwhile, Colin Farrell is currently gracing our screens in the HBO series “The Penguin,” which is set within Matt Reeves’s universe of “The Batman.” At present, no further casting decisions have been made, and the release date for this intriguing project remains undisclosed.
