Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro Reuniting for New ‘Meet the Parents’ Sequel

The original trilogy holds a special place in my heart, reminding me of simpler times when a good laugh could be found in the quirky antics of Greg Focker and his family.

In the upcoming sequel to the hit film series, Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro will once again step into their iconic roles. Originally based on a 1992 independent movie, “Meet the Parents” tells the story of Greg Focker (played by Ben Stiller), who accompanies his girlfriend Pam Byrnes (Terri Polo) to meet her parents, Jack and Dina (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner). However, things take an unexpected turn when Jack, a former CIA agent, subjects Greg to a grueling interrogation over the weekend, testing him to win the family’s approval. “Meet the Parents” was a massive box office success, earning $330.4 million worldwide and spawning two more films: “Meet the Fockers” in 2004 and “Little Fockers” in 2010.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that according to Deadline, Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, along with Terri Polo and Blythe Danner, are gearing up for another installment of our beloved series. The specifics about the plot remain under wraps, but John Hamburg, who penned the script for all three previous movies, is back to write this sequel. Jay Roach, who directed the earlier films, won’t be at the helm this time, but will continue his involvement as a producer, joining De Niro and Jane Rosenthal in that role. At present, there’s no director attached to the project.

It’s unclear if beloved characters such as Owen Wilson (who portrayed Kevin Rawley, Pam’s ex and the Byrnes family friend) will reappear in the upcoming fourth movie. The 2004 film “Meet the Fockers” introduced Greg’s parents, Bernie and Roz Focker, played by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand respectively. It remains to be seen if either Hoffman or Streisand will make a comeback. The appeal of watching legendary 70’s stars like De Niro, Hoffman, and Streisand together on screen made “Meet the Fockers” a massive hit at the box office during the 2004 holiday season. The movie earned $522 million globally and ranked as the seventh highest grossing film of that year. However, the 2010 sequel “Little Fockers” was met with disappointment due to its larger budget and lower earnings compared to its predecessors, bringing in $310 million worldwide. Despite seeming like the end of the franchise, typical of Hollywood, it seems nothing is truly over.

‘Meet the Parents’ 2.0

It certainly makes sense that Universal Pictures wants to dust off the Meet the Parents IP. The comedy franchise still has a lot of goodwill and the first two movies hold a great deal of nostalgia for fans, as it has been 14 years since the last entry and now 24 years since the first movie. With how popular legacy sequels have become in the past decade following Creed and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it was only a matter of time until Meet the Parents got a revival.

In the next installment, it seems fitting for Ben Stiller’s character, Greg, to assume the role previously held by Robert De Niro’s Jack in “Meet the Parents.” In 2005, Ben and Pam welcomed twins, Samantha and Herny, who turned five in 2010’s “Little Fockers.” If the fourth film is to premiere in 2026, the twins would be 21 years old. This could mean they’d bring their college sweethearts home for a family gathering, setting up a scenario where Ben, now an overprotective parent, might seek advice from his father-in-law. This role reversal offers an opportunity to revisit the charm of the original film while adding a new twist to the storyline.
