Ben Stiller Shocked by Severance Season 2’s Bloody Finale Twist

Warning: The Following Contains Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 10, “Cold Harbor”

In the final episode of “Severance” Season 2, aired today on Apple TV+, things took an unexpectedly grim turn, even surprising executive producer and director Ben Stiller with its intense violence. The acclaimed sci-fi thriller first premiered in 2022 and quickly caught the attention of viewers with its story about employees at Lumon Industries. Since then, it has become Apple’s most popular series to date. Shortly after the finale, Apple officially announced that the show will return for a third season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Stiller discussed the finale of “Severance” Season 2, which saw Mr. Drummond (Darri Ólafsson) meet his end at the hands of Mark S. (Adam Scott). The scene, reminiscent of a Dario Argento film, featured Mr. Drummond sprawled out on pristine white tiles with pools of bright red blood spreading around him. According to Stiller, “The visuals of those white hallways are striking. When you add blood to them, it becomes even more stark and shocking.” He went on to say that while he had a feeling things might get intense, he didn’t anticipate the events reaching such extremes.

To clarify, Lumon’s focus on security has always intrigued me. I wondered, ‘Perhaps at some stage…,’ but I didn’t envision a scenario where characters were constantly armed. This isn’t the type of series that portrays violence. However, there must be a hidden aspect to this organization. Initially, I suspected we might reach this point eventually, but I hadn’t anticipated it would unfold as dramatically as it has.

So far, the TV series “Severance” has mostly avoided violence, with just a few instances involving a baseball bat. However, the Season 2 finale broke this pattern, providing a surprising contrast. Marking this departure, actor Will Forte stated, “This could be a scene that might shock viewers.” He further explained, “At Lumon, it seems everything is hinted at, but never fully shown. But when things reach their peak, we see the true, unsightly nature of what’s happening there.

How Many Seasons of ‘Severance’ Will There Be?

Due to the announcement today that Apple has confirmed another season for the series “Severance”, Stiller has eased concerns among fans by stating that they won’t have to wait as long as three years between seasons, as was the case with Season 2. However, he hasn’t disclosed any details about how many total seasons there may be for this psychological sci-fi-thriller. When questioned if creator Dan Erickson had a specific number of seasons planned, Stiller simply said:

Absolutely, I share this sentiment. My aim is to keep everyone informed about our upcoming plans for the show. Ideally, we’ll establish a consistent release schedule. It’s been a tough journey with COVID-19 and subsequent strikes, but I’m determined to ensure transparency about our activities and expectations moving forward.

While waiting for updates about the release schedule of Severance‘s third season, here’s something exciting: you can watch both seasons that are already available right now on Apple TV+!
