Ben Stiller Thinks Making 'Tropic Thunder' Today Would Be Harder to Do

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Tropic Thunder remains one of those rare comedies that effortlessly blends humor and controversy in a way that leaves audiences both entertained and thoughtful. The film, released back in 2008, was a testament to the power of edgy comedy, showcasing the unapologetic wit of its creators.

In many instances, humor and controversy tend to overlap, but their bond has faced some strife in recent times due to what is referred to as ‘cancel culture’. A frequently cited example of how this supposed shift has impacted the genre is the 2008 film, Tropic Thunder. Its director and lead actor share the opinion that the current climate makes it difficult, if not impossible, to produce an action-comedy in today’s world.

In a chat with Collider, Stiller was questioned about whether Tropic Thunder could be produced today. He suggested that producing edgier comedies in 2024 may prove challenging. Yet, he swiftly noted that they were fortunate to secure the go-ahead for Tropic Thunder as early as 2008.

I’m skeptical about it. In truth, pushing the boundaries with comedy in this particular setting proves challenging. Not just on the scale we attempted, considering the financial aspect of the industry. At the time, I believe we were fortunate to even produce it, and I attribute that mainly to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. He took interest in it and said, “Let’s bring this project to life.” It has a very exclusive feel when you consider it deeply.

To be frank, having Robert portray a character depicting an African American was quite a risky move back then as well. Frankly, we went ahead with it because the joke was clearly aimed at award-hungry actors. But in today’s climate, I’m not sure if I would have made that decision. Honestly, I’m being truthful about that.

Will We Ever See ‘Tropic Thunder 2’?

It’s apparent now that Stiller wouldn’t dare recreate Robert Downey Jr.’s complex character Kirk Lazarus in today’s context, given Downey Jr.’s own reservations about the humor surrounding the role. Previously, Downey Jr. expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating that the subject has become quite murky. However, despite their hesitations, discussions about a sequel persist, with Downey Jr. expressing last year that he’d consider reprising his role…as long as he could share the screen with Tom Cruise’s fiery studio executive, Les Grossman.

Justin Theroux, the writer, has expressed openness to a potential sequel, stating back in August that if an idea strikes him as compellingly as it did Tim, he would definitely make a sequel. Notably, the original Tropic Thunder has seen renewed success on Paramount+ streaming platform lately. Although Ben Stiller might feel apprehensive about remaking the film today, there’s no denying that interest in a follow-up remains strong.

2008 saw the debut of “Tropic Thunder,” a film helmed by Ben Stiller. The movie centers around Stiller’s character, Tugg Speedman, a spoiled action star who ventures to Southeast Asia for a costly war film production. However, things take an unexpected turn when real combat erupts in the jungle during filming. Alongside Stiller, the cast includes big names like Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Brandon T. Jackson, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Cruise, with Downey Jr. not far behind. The movie was well-received, earning Robert Downey Jr. an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
