The entire Marvel fan community was caught off guard by Robert Downey Jr.’s major San Diego Comic-Con disclosure a year ago, as he declared his comeback to the MCU, assuming the role of a fresh character – Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Yet, while fans were left speechless, none were more astounded than Downey Jr’s co-stars, many of whom had no inkling about his return. Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Dr. Strange in the MCU, is the most recent actor to speak up, revealing their genuine and uncensored response to the news, and it’s amusingly relatable.
During an interview with Variety, Cumberbatch candidly shared his immediate response upon seeing Downey Jr. don the Dr. Doom mask at SDCC last year – “I simply texted, ‘Wow!'” he admitted to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Although Doctor Strange and Iron Man teamed up to save the world in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, their friendship off-screen isn’t as close as their on-screen brotherhood. Surprisingly, Cumberbatch found out that Downey Jr., the star of Iron Man, would return, since he had no prior knowledge of this development. However, he expressed his genuine delight for his Avengers co-star and emphasized that despite being caught off guard, he is thrilled for Downey Jr.’s comeback.
“And then quickly added, ‘Good what-the-f*ck. I mean, good what-the-f*ck.”
Among the numerous MCU actors, Cumberbatch was among those kept in the dark about the major revelation. In fact, when asked about it, Don Cheadle (War Machine) reacted with a surprised “What the heck!” It’s also worth mentioning that even some of the original Avengers cast, such as Jeremy Renner, were unaware of this twist. As Renner himself admitted, “I had no idea. This guy didn’t tell me anything, and we’re good friends.
Dr. Strange Won’t Be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
It’s unfortunate that Benedict Cumberbatch didn’t find out about Robert Downey Jr.’s return, and now it seems he’ll have to endure a longer wait before they can team up again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a surprising turn of events during an interview, the usually secretive Cumberbatch (who once served as Tom Holland’s spoiler watchdog during the press for Avengers: Endgame) accidentally revealed when and where Doctor Strange will next show up in the upcoming MCU lineup.
The actor playfully expressed his disregard for potential spoilers by saying, “Is that a spoiler? Never mind!” before announcing his absence from Avengers: Doomsday. Yet, he hinted at a significant role in the subsequent Avengers film titled Avengers: Secret Wars, stating, “He’s quite central to where things might go.” In addition, Cumberbatch shared that a third Doctor Strange movie is under development at Marvel Studios.
The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. Notable directors Joe and Anthony Russo are coming back to direct not only “Doomsday,” but also “Secret Wars.” As of now, the specifics of the plot remain undisclosed. The title “Doomsday” might simply be a reference to Robert Downey Jr.’s latest character, while “Secret Wars” is one of Marvel Comics’ most significant and adored events, similar in stature to the “Infinity Saga.
