Renowned South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, winner of multiple Oscars, gracefully navigated the snow-covered Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday to present his eagerly anticipated sci-fi production titled Mickey 17. It didn’t take long for the international press in Berlin to question the relevance of this new film by the acclaimed director, in light of the world’s turbulent political climate. In Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson plays a struggling space colonist living in a technologically advanced dystopia ruled by a tyrant portrayed by Mark Ruffalo with his characteristic zest.
When asked if any of Ruffalo’s actions were modeled after President Donald Trump, Bong replied that he drew inspiration for the character from some controversial leaders from Korea’s past and dictators from other countries. However, he clarified that he didn’t base the character on any modern politicians. He stated humorously that since history often repeats itself, the character might resemble someone contemporary.
The director aimed to make the story feel as authentic and emotionally relatable as possible, even though it contained supernatural aspects.
He mentioned that although the story is set in the future, it feels as if it could unfold in the present or even the past. This is one of the reasons he appreciates fantasy genres; because the characters are portrayed in such a way that they appear incredibly human, making them not confined to the realm of science fiction.
In a future that isn’t too far off, Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 science fiction novel Mickey 7. This story centers around Pattnison, a directionless young man who decides to take on the risky role of an “expendable,” a low-class worker who undertakes perilous space missions and is replaced through cloning technology every time he meets his end during these missions. Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun join Ruffalo in this production.
Bong pointed out that Mickey 17 features Bong’s initial love tale throughout his profession, a romantic relationship between Pattinson’s duplicate and another cosmic figure.
The director shared his aspiration, ‘I aim to create films across all genres.’ This is my ultimate life objective, though I must admit, I do feel a tad apprehensive about directing musicals.
Mickey, Bong’s first movie since Parasite won multiple Oscars in 2019, has generated lots of interest. Originally slated for a 2024 release, the film’s postproduction complications have pushed its premiere into 2025.
The movie premiered for the first time in South Korea on January 28th, and it’s set to debut in the United States on March 7th. Warner Bros. will be distributing the film globally.
