As a long-time film enthusiast who has attended countless Berlin International Film Festivals, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming changes for the 2025 edition! The addition of the Stage Bluemax Theater on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz as a premiere screening venue is a fantastic move that will bring us even closer to the heart of Potsdamer Platz.
For the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the Berlinale, a fresh screening location has been revealed. This new venue is situated near Potsdamer Platz and will be the Stage Bluemax Theater on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, which is being transformed into a premiere theater seating approximately 500 people by the time of the 75th Berlinale (February 13-23). This new venue, conveniently located close to the main festival site, the Berlinale Palast, will serve as the base for the newly established Perspectives first feature competition, and it will also host significant premieres from various other Berlinale sections.
Organizers of the festival have unveiled plans for a short-term festival venue named Berlinale HUB75, to be constructed at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz during the event. This temporary hub will offer a variety of free morning discussions and events tailored for local Berlin audiences, as well as serve as a social gathering spot for industry professionals and filmmakers.
The actions are an initiative taken by Berlinale to restore the festival at Potsdamer Platz. The shutdown of significant screens in the Berlin area led to a loss of approximately 150,000 viewing spaces for the festival. To make up for this shortfall, they shifted screenings to theaters located further away across the city.
Following the shutdown and renovation of significant cinemas in 2022, Berlinale’s director Tricia Tuttle noted that it has lost some of its previous prominence and excitement around Potsdamer Platz. These new locations are part of our long-term strategy to establish a more accessible festival center and revitalize this central area with renewed vigor and exposure.
Detailed information about all the locations for the Berlinale will become available in December. The program schedule for the 2025 event is set to be unveiled in January.
