Berlin Flashback: Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke’s ‘Before Midnight’ Threepeat

In 1995, when director Richard Linklater debuted his movie titled “Before Sunrise” at the Berlinale, he unknowingly started something quite significant. This film featured Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as two youthful students who met on a Eurail train and embarked on a romantic stroll-and-conversation through Vienna’s streets before dawn.

“I took a chance with this movie, choosing to keep costs low, and I’m confident it was the right call. As it turns out, that bet paid off in a big way! The $2.5 million film we made at Castle Rock didn’t just win me the Silver Bear for Best Director at the festival, but it went on to be an indie sensation, raking in a whopping $22.5 million globally, thanks to Columbia Pictures.”

A little over nine years had passed since my last visit, but in 2004 I found myself back at the festival with “Before Sunset.” Catching up with Jesse and Celine in Paris during an afternoon was truly a delight. Fast forward another nine years, and I returned once more to the festival for “Before Midnight,” where Jesse and Celine were now a couple, but their future together seemed uncertain as they spent a day discussing their issues while on vacation in Greece. During the screening, the festival’s director, Dieter Kosslick, surprised me with a Berlinale Camera trophy – an honor I received for talents or institutions that the festival feels deeply grateful towards, established back in 1986.

In the movie “Before Midnight”, John DeFore, a film critic, speculates that the couple’s extraordinary relationship could explode in a single day, fueled by built-up resentment and feelings of parental guilt. This prediction, as dramatic as a ticking clock, proved to be as far from the truth as possible. In fact, Linklater and Hawke are back together this year for the world premiere of Linklater’s latest film, Sony Pictures Classics’ musical drama “Blue Moon”, where Hawkes will portray the character of songwriter Lorenz Hart.
